Punk Performance on Bandstand (1964)

Post by Kyle »

You've heard the song. You've seen the Family Guy parody. But I just saw the performance of "Surfin' Bird" by the Trashmen on American Bandstand in 1964, and it is absolutely the most fucking punk thing I've ever seen- particularly before there was a thing called punk. I tried to cue this up to the particular part I'm talking about (the 1:04 mark). But it's spectacular.

For 1964, that's metal AF
Any time the solution is "banjo rifle", I'm in 100%.

I just want to say that I watched this again today and sent it to a friend. This makes me so happy. Not just because it's a great performance, but because for 1963 it's such an amazing performance. I wish. I WISH I could have ever been this brave and cool in my life. This is just f'ing epic.
