What countries, new and old, are listed the most as the most recent previous governing power over a country? This includes occupiers as well as countries that were split into smaller countries.

Example: The Dominican Republic has been occupied by multiple governments, but was last governed by Haiti. And this is all according to wikipedia, because if you know anything about the history of Dominican Republic in the 20th century, you would seriously doubt wikipedia's answer. Anyway, this would add one tally to Haiti.

I clumped together a few countries that were technically different countries but occupy about the same space/power center. Like Kyle's first guess.

#1 UK - 53 countries (plus four partially run) including The United States (as Great Britain), Antiqua and Barbuda, Australia, Bahamas, Bahrain, Barbados, Belize, Botswana, Brunei, Cameroon, Canada, Cyprus, Dominica, Egypt, Fiji, Gambia, Ghana, Grenada, Guyana, India, Ireland, Israel, Jamaica, Kenya, Kiribati, Lesotho, Malawi, Malaysia, Maldives, Malta, Mauritius, Myanmar, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Qatar, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Uganda, UAE, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Sudan, and more.

#2 France - 23 (plus two partially run) including Algeria, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Chad, Congo, Cote d'Ivoire, Haiti, Lebanon, Madagascar, Tunisia, and more.

#3 Russia / Soviet Union 17 (plus one partial) including its federated states, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, North Korea. Surprisingly left out most within the Iron Curtain, guess they counted it as a sphere of influence over an occupation, and then there's Czechoslovakia, which would count if it still existed.

Although Alexander Achenbach invaded the country in the late 70s, its government has not occupied another country nor broken itself up into tinier countries... yet.

Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Sao Tome and Princeipe and partial credit for Portugal

Germany is #4! Specifically Nazi Germany...
Albania, Belgium, Denmark, France, Luxembourg, Monaco, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, and partial credit for Greece.


For the remaining three, some clues:
- The countries no longer exist.
- #8 stopped existing in the 20th century
- #9 stopped existing in the 20th century
- #10 I never heard of, existed from 1823 to 1841

I'm stuck on the 1823 - 1841 one. I'm going to guess Sardinia, but I bet it's wrong because I think Pete has heard of it. My hunch is that it's either a European country that is in present day Italy or German, or that it's something in/around India.

I have no clue on that one, but I'm sure the other missing one was a major player in WWI.
