In my opinion it only matters in very few Senate races. Where moderate Republicans are defending seats in purple-to-blue states, having to go on the record absolving Trump MIGHT cost them their seat, but voting against Trump guarantees his wrath and getting forced out of the party Justin Amash style. So yeah, let Susan Collins and Corey Gardner and Martha McSally make that awful choice.

The sad part for them is that a strategic leader (like Mitch) would let them dissent. The GOP can spare a handful of votes and still protect Trump, but Trump will brook no dissent. My guess is that every GOP senator stands by the president. Better to take the risk with the voters than face certain defeat by crossing Trump.

I like Patrick but am not seeing why he would lure, say, Harris supporters like myself to his cause. He's right to have a message of optimism and togetherness. The people motivated by negative feeling will vote D anyway. These incomprehensible swing voters aren't moved by that and maybe need a positive, future-oriented optimism that is lacking in some candidates right now. I'm cynical about whether we can heal our partisan divide, but Patrick acts and speaks as if we still can and maybe the people in the middle still need to hear that message. Personally, I know he'll be hated by Trump's base as much as Obama was and for the same reasons, but Obama won people over by presenting himself as an uplifter and uniter. Maybe Patrick can do that where Warren and Sanders cannot, and especially if Biden falters as standard bearer. Maybe they have polling from people (or maybe I should say Donors) who support Biden with unease about his winning two terms or inspiring sufficient voter turnout, which is a legit concern. Patrick might do better on that front.

Lots of criticism of his late entry but the threshold is still low - pick up 2% and you're in the mix with the rest.

I want to like Warren but it's going to be so easy to paint her ideas as "socialist", which is crazy because she will insist she believes in capitalism, well-regulated, and people have a totally irrational definition of and fear of that S-word. But she never talks about capitalism offering solutions, where Patrick explicitly discusses harnessing competition and investment for innovation and growth. Maybe a message designed for wealthy party backers, but if they pay for the campaign, well, that's the oligarchy we have today.

I am not getting any Joy from Deval Patrick and I'm back to hoping that Kamala Harris breaks through. I'm sorry y'all but I don't think Pete can turn out the votes, and even if he can, he's just not the best qualified person to do this job. He'd make a great VP candidate for someone. I also find it very annoying that Cory Booker has a Rhodes scholarship but you wouldn't hear a damn thing about that - did you all see that article about how everyone mentions the nice things about Mayor Pete but they don't mention the same qualifications people like Castro or Booker have? We get big articles about the dangers of Elizabeth Warren, we get no attention for Klobuchar unless it's about a goddamn fork, but we hear all this glowing stuff about the ... Mayor. It's not his fault but I'm just kind of annoyed by it at this point.

You know, I had a chance to be a Rhodes scholar. I think that's the one. It was one of the well known scholarships like that. I passed on even applying for it because I had just graduated, was getting married in a few months, and wanted to find a job and get started with life, instead of spending more time in school spending money instead of earning it. Overall, I'm happy with my choice.
