Jennifer Rubin is on fire lately. Never thought I'd see the day I am straight on with Jennifer Rubin at all times, but there we are.

That said, the scoops lately seem to be coming from the defense teams, so they either don't know quite what they're talking about or they are willfully misleading. Either way, yesterday I was excited about "ongoing crimes" but now seems we're back to where we knew we were.

We are probably actually living in purgatory, or hell, or we're in hell and it's cold, because I am defending Jennifer Rubin now in addition to simply agreeing with her recent work. I think it's a different thing to dislike a person in the sense that you wouldn't want to be friends with them, and to disagree with policies in the sense that you don't think those are the best choices among others. You could feel that way about Romney and still think he was the best candidate for a job, and you might even argue vigorously for those policies if you thought that the Democrats had even worse ideas. This gets back to the distinction I was talking with Mike about in the other thread. I don't think it's bad to support a candidate who has different policies or a personality you find disagreeable. For some people this is how it began when they voted for Trump. I imagine this is how it was for Rubin and Romney.

Where we are with Trump now is different. Every person who voted for him should have some grave moral problems with things that he's saying and doing, and if not, they no longer get to judge other people's choices in this arena. I think Rubin is sticking up for her principles here. If she merely disliked the guy or disagreed with him on some things, I don't think she'd have any problem supporting him as the Republican over the Democrat option. I think she looks at Trump and sees a bad person who's doing bad destructive things to hurt our democracy, in a way that we would not have expected Romney to. And she's right.

Struggling to understand what reason you could have at this point. Is it still a matter of comparison to Hillary as the counterpoint? If so, that was a year and a half ago; at some point we need to be able to judge Trump's merits on their own terms even if Hillary does run free upon the earth, having escaped jail.

I do talk about this subject with some of my and my spouse's relatives (the ones with whom a person can reason, because that's down to a few from this group) and their reasons now boil down to taxes, foreign policy, and abortion. For one of my relatives, the stuff about taxes is true. For the others no tax benefit is forthcoming and I'm not sure why they do not understand this. The foreign policy is ... bad. He does every single thing he accused Obama, Bush, and Clinton of doing incorrectly, but big-league. I try to think of one good thing in this area: OK, he could have chosen someone worse than Nikki Haley. The abortion... still legal! Meanwhile, a full-scale assault ensues on health care that helped to prevent abortion and improve pregnancy outcomes, and children are being taken from their parents (and often... lost!) as a deliberate tactic for thwarting immigration.

Edited: some of these people are also actively racist and want the immigration of non-white people to cease, but I have chosen to leave out that reason as part of a sane person's positive case for what might be good about Trump, for reasons that should be OBVIOUS but are not, somehow.

Note that the above is just me trying to understand the POSITIVE case one could make for Trump or Trumpism. I'm not even touching the negative case; I don't have that kind of time in the day.

I don't need to know anything about Melania Trump's hospital stay, thanks news media, but meanwhile every other serious topic being neglected could be helpful.

Bafffffffffled as to why the Mueller investigation seems to be motivating only extreme ostrich behavior, hysterical conspiracy speculation, or a collective shrug. In any other universe, any other presidency, what has happened so far is mind boggling. You don't need wild theories; the plain "what people have been indicted for" and which witnesses are cooperating is enough all by itself. I hope they keep patiently doing their thing and the public patiently chills until it's done, even if that takes years. I remain astonished that anyone trusts Trump. Would you lend him ten bucks, for real? Maybe you have an instrumental goal you think he achieves, maybe you think he's no worse a liar than anyone else (F), but OMG, would you lend him ten bucks, and is there a fundamental national security problem involved in having a President you wouldn't trust to hit you back next week for today's McDonald's lunch?

Also what he does with Native American issues because of old casino grudges is ... Illustrative.

At this point the main reason I assume Trump is guilty as sin of something for which we have only seen the tip of the iceberg is that he is frantically tweeting nonstop about it. My goodness, it must be really bad, proportionate to all the crazed tweeting.
