The Night Of

Gripping, dramatic crime/trial type show with great actors. It's flawed in some ways but is one of those shows that is less about the specific events of the show, and more about a comment on the way our society is, the way people are, and the viewer's own feelings, biases, and fears. I had a hard time watching it due to being scary and tense - the whole thing is very heavy and tense and negative - and oddly it got easier later in the show. I had to read and get all the spoilers so that I wouldn't be freaked out by it, since my husband was watching it at bedtime and I had nightmares. But I assume nobody here wants spoilers, so that is all for now.

Arrested Development season 4 was a interesting experiment in "binge" watching and releasing a entire season at a time when that idea was still in its infancy.

But bloated running times and focusing on only one character at a time easily made it the weakest season in the series.

In a interesting movie Netflix has added a new version of season 4, one that stretches out to 22 episodes that are more traditional length and with a mix of characters in every episode. Not sure anything like this has been done before but the show is much improved.

There's this show called Money Heist which we watch with the closed captioning AND they have overdubbed it into English from Spanish or Portuguese or something. The contrast between the two mistranslations - sometimes I'm quite confident both must be totally wrong - adds a layer of unintentional hilarity that makes the experience worthwhile. Otherwise the show is totally idiotic, but they do get into some interesting themes. Also rape; there's a whole "is it consensual?" recurring question to which the show's makers answer a resounding, "No, but we certainly wish to show you a lot of it, because provocative!"

I finished season 1 of Stranger things and got in 3 episodes of Season 2, also watched 3 episodes of The Frankenstein Chronicles (starring Sean Bean and he's still alive).

Lately I have been watching some Charlie Chaplin videos on Youtube and loving them. So far my favorite is "Modern Times

Watching a lot of NETFLIX ANIME during my morning/night exercises, its mostly loud nonsense that I can barely follow but it's kind of hypnotic to a degree so it makes me forget how damp and sweaty I am.

Started watching Kimmy Schmidt Season 4 and, I'm sorry, it's sucking. Totally over the Reverend; there is nothing else funny or instructive there. Jane and Titus are being wasted. Only a handful of good moments worthy of the first seasons, like when Lillian encounters a tech convention. Mostly I liked seasons one and two, but I was so dismayed by the first episodes of four that I went back to The Classic, season 3 episode 2, where Titus "Lemonades" (this pretty much ended me - just move on and put that guy in his own new show already), Kimmy goes back to school to become a crossing guard but is drawn into taking philosophy instead, and Lillian laments that Titus can't vote for her because he's not registered, which he can't do just in case he could be called to serve on a jury, but that's impossible as he has "no peers". I died a little inside and cackled myself senseless, but it was well worth it.

We started watching "Orphan Black" over the weekend. We're barely in to it, but it's really good.

I thoroughly enjoyed most of that show. Absurd but fun and if you like the main actress then it's a no-brainer. FYI though: like many shows it trails off as you get further into the seasons, and you will find it much more enjoyable if you just pretend that you're living in an alternate universe where science is something very different from what real science in our world is. Expect nothing, in other words.

I can officially say that Kimmy season 4 sucks. They should have just stopped after episode 2 of season 3 because it was a pinnacle from which they could not go anywhere but down. There are so many great, hilarious actors in this show, you can really tell when the writing suffers. And it is suffering. They need to start over and do a spin-off with Titus, where the other people show up as bit characters again.

The new half season of arrested development is really funny. The running joke of Tobias doing awful impressions of everyone in the family made me cry laugh.

Finished all of the Americans, which we've been watching for a long time now. It was really good. There were some slow / repetitive points across the seasons, but in a series of this length it's quite understandable. They handled the final season choices pretty well I thought. The final episode was gripping; if you enjoyed watching any earlier part of the series, it would at least be worth watching the last few episodes.

There's a new season of Alone, this time with people from past seasons, and some of the people who are re-appearing were just BELOVED by me, and you can't give spoilers about this show but I can say that in one case I was completely heartbroken by what happened, and you will know what I mean only after you watch it, because you will be heartbroken too. This person SO MUCH deserved to win and is SUCH an amazing human being, just SUCH an awesome person overall, and I actually cried over it. I guess that is not saying much; I cry all the time. Still! You may cry too, it was sad.

My wife and I have been watching British mystery shows, in particular "DCI Banks" and "Scott and Bailey." Well acted and good dialogue. Sometimes they get a bit soap opery, but the seasons are short enough that that doesn't dominate.

I have to say, I really like James Corden's Carpool Karaoke segments. But his latest, with Sir Paul McCartney, was probably the best one ever. It's rather long, but very interesting.

Just got back from camp and t hi is was the first thing my wife showed me. It really is the best Carpool Karaoke ever.

Battlestar Galactica - finally watching the new one and pretty deep into it now. It's like if the Young and Restless circa 1986 became a space/species-survival show. I can't even express to you how much the doctor and his mind-girlfriend annoy me. They annoyed me right from the beginning and I kept expecting their situation to be resolved and somehow go away, but it just keeps getting worse and worse and makes the show unwatchably, disgustingly bad. At this point I'm just sitting here working on projects while someone else watches, waiting hopefully for that day they kill off both these characters, or better yet, that the President and Captain Adama jump off by themselves in a spaceship to Earth and leave the rest of these idiots behind forever.

Also watching Alone but feeling bummed that it's not more of a how-to and explanation show as opposed to a "game". The best parts are when they show how somebody goes about a vital task they have to do. Unfortunately they don't show enough of that.
