Re: Best Albums By Women: Brackettime
Ya, that was a hard one. But the more good music the better.
Re: Best Albums By Women: Brackettime
Shelby vs. Fiona was a tough one. I've liked plenty of Fiona stuff, and I seem always drawn to any production work by Jon Brion (who produced the classic Aimee Mann albums, which all amazingly missed this list. Aimee Mann's "I'm With Stupid" is better than both of these albums, and most of the rest). There's a lot of good stuff here.
But Shelby, which I came to knowing nothing, has more catchy songs at this point (4 listens each), so close, but I'm giving it to her.

Re: Best Albums By Women: Brackettime
Macy Gray's debut is a completely fine and good album, fun songs and all. It fine.
Ys is something else though, can't tell if it's great or some kind of otherworldly masterpiece. No matter, I will be continuing to investigate what Ys is.

Re: Best Albums By Women: Brackettime
Macy Gray and Newsome was hard because they are such different styles. We're getting into some tricky ones for me above because I'm not aware of them, but then that's kind of the point, isn't it?
Re: Best Albums By Women: Brackettime
Certainly tricky. A 72-minute collaborative feminist album by an amazing drummer vs a 28-minute pop punk album by the only trans singer on the list. Both, after 4 listens each, have their great qualities. I'm leaning one way, but still quite undecided.

Re: Best Albums By Women: Brackettime
Well, I've added the Carrington album to my playlist, but that's because I like Jazzy things.
Re: Best Albums By Women: Brackettime
Yeah, nixing Trangender Dysphoria Blues. It's good and autobiographical and full of hooks that hook me more and more each listen. No complaints. Close one.

Re: Best Albums By Women: Brackettime
These two are pretty equal. I might have to give the tie to the NPR ranking, why should I second-guess who's better if I can't literally second-guess who's better. So they ranked Carly Simon better, so I will give it to her. Btw, her album is called "No Secrets", which is BS because the subject(s) of "You're So Vain" might be the biggest secret in pop music history.
Anywho Fanny can write fine lyrics but the music is where it's at. Also, props to them so early on figuring out that The Beatles' "Hey Bulldog" is an underrated gem. Their version is the best cover I've heard of it.

(Norah has a huge advantage here as I've heard her album 10+ times and have spent almost two decades enjoying it)

Yeah, it's no contest. "I Love Rock and Roll" goes good. I love "Come Away With Me".

Re: Best Albums By Women: Brackettime
I liked "Diary of Alicia Keys" better than this album, but "Imagination" hasn't got anything even close to match Midnight Train to Georgia. Hmm
Re: Best Albums By Women: Brackettime
OK album, Alicia's is better. I dunno some on this list, feels like someone was like "hey I love this artist" and then picked the album that has their favorite song off it, because they couldn't select the greatest hits. The list is greatest albums by women, not best albums of great women. I'm probably wrong.

Re: Best Albums By Women: Brackettime
I appreciate Reba McEntire, but it's such a niche thing, there are only a few songs showcasing her voice that I can enjoy. Most of the time it's a person with a good voice, heavily twanged up, singing a bad song. I do wonder why she wears a hood under her hat on the album cover.
Re: Best Albums By Women: Brackettime
Hmm, yes I see that but I dunno if the lyrics in Body Talk are any better. That said, Body Talk is by-far the more interesting and fun album. I'll follow you. Man, a lot of upsets in the first round, but I'm ok with that.

Re: Best Albums By Women: Brackettime
That's an interesting article. I feel it very personally. Key difference:
* You did something great here with real potential; what will you choose to do next? How will you improve this? Let's dig into many real details. I learn from you but have much to teach you too.
Vs.
* You have that "star" quality. I love your work but do not wish to bother with its details. This work should be successful. You are worthy of me. My shine will improve your shine and vice versa, pet.
The first guy is a real mentor; the second guy is not doing a thing for/with you but thinks he is your supporter and will be hurt if not taken to be such.

Re: Best Albums By Women: Brackettime
Ah yes, I'm giving their list respect by analyzing it like I would any list, and admiring it, and critiquing it. They did a pretty great job, given that I really hated only one album. That's an ace quality:stinker ratio. Ok, I feel a bit better now.
Down goes the Slits "Cut"! It was closer than I thought though, because I think Cocteau Twin's "Heaven or Las Vegas" is great, and blew me away when I first heard it (earlier this year), but "Cut" has grown on me every listen. They both very good. But Cocteau I think is just a bit better.

Carpenters - A Song for You
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x0pktFO ... 0GkEU4frR9
(mistakenly thought I heard the Carpenters album, when I actually had heard "Close to You". So I've been binging on this to catch up, and it's good. Shirley's live album seems like a good mix of standards, but didn't realize she was also playing piano, and singing jazz and sometimes complicated counterpoint melodies and improvisations at the same time, which is a pretty amazing feat. But since "live" albums get the advantage of being like a greatest-hits I wonder if it should be discounted a bit compared to "Close to You" which does have another great singer, Karen Carpenter, this time sometimes playing drums)

Re: Best Albums By Women: Brackettime
I don't know if I dreamed this or not, but I thought that the White Stripes took inspiration for their whole ethos - not just the color scheme of the album cover, but the whole overall boy + girl, simple song structures, unexpected 70s melodies ethos of the Carpenters from this album. A simple google reveals nothing so maybe I made this up, but ... I swear I read this.
Re: Best Albums By Women: Brackettime
I can see that! Fun poppy "sibling" duo with girl drummer..
Though true inspiration must've came when Jack saw Flat Duo Jets

Happy to say I have seen that live show and it was a damn good live show.
Re: Best Albums By Women: Brackettime
Tough one, keep going back and forth. They are good, as expected. I'm going to give a slight edge to Shirley. Just the slightest.
