Incidentally, I've tracked at least one branch of my family tree to arriving in the Massachusetts colony in 1640. Too late for that particular massacre, but still gives you an idea of the sort of environment he was arriving in. And I've actually been surprised at the proportion of my family tree I have found to be pre-Revolutionary residence of the American colonies, which is cool. And so far, I haven't found any evidence, via census data or wills, that any of my ancestors were slave owners, but I haven't explored all of the branches thoroughly yet.

T I thought your story was very interesting. As far as I know I only have one branch of the family that goes all the way back that far in the colonies. They were Pennsylvania Dutch, owned a Tavern, and fought in the Revolutionary War. I hope this means I'm Jeff's cousin. Everyone else came over later in the mid or late 1800's, or early 1900s.
