So much meat

I have a small chest freezer in my basement that I put a quarter beef into. It was a cow I helped raise (and by "help", I mean that I hand fed it whenever the in-laws were out of town), and it tasted awesome. Well, now we're down to just a few steaks and a couple other packages when my sister-in-law found an awesome deal on pork. So now my chest freezer and my regular freezer are stuffed full with a whole hog. We've barely touched the pig when Hy Vee offered a deal on chicken this morning: 20 pounds of drumsticks for $7. I can hardly pass that up. So by shutting off the ice maker and removing the ice bin, I have managed to squeeze my chicken in, and I can still shut the freezer doors. But there's no room for things like ice cream and pizzas and burritos.

I suspect it's time for a bigger freezer. I'm going to try to sort and rearrange, but we'll see. A meaty embarrassment of riches.

Not to mention that construction is nearly finished on my mother-in-law's new "shed" which will include her very own butchering floor so she can do all the work herself (she used to work at a meat locker... she's good at this). So that next quarter beef will be an even better deal than the last.

My wife likes Hy Vee on Facebook. This was one of their daily Facebook deals. Had to show them the ad to read off the code number.

It was eight 2.5 lb bags for $10, and I got 16¢ on fuel saver which translates to just over three bucks back on gas.

Heck, a couple years ago, they offered 20¢ fuel saver on $4 packs of muffins. Essentially, it was free muffins. Everyone thought I was crazy when I loaded up with 30 boxes of muffins... but they were FREE! We gave them away at work, at school... put some in the freezer. Can't beat free. In fact, the muffins were actually $3.99 per pack, so technically, they were paying me a penny for every box I took off their hands.

Fuel Saver is glorious. Between that and Hy Vee being the closest store to the house, it's hard to remember that Woodman's is cheaper.

Seriously though,that all sounds awesome, Mike. My wife and I were planning on building our own food prep building separate from the house for summer canning with 2 upright freezers and the appropriate meat prep equipment...just for or own stuff. Our phase 3 plan is to have sheep. ( Phase 1 was chickens. Phase 2 is goats.)
