Top Grossers: 8/18/17

Rules: Guess the Friday through Sunday domestic gross (as reported in the actuals from Box Office Mojo) for the number one movie for the weekend of August 18-20. You get points based on the difference between your guess and the actual opening (whether its higher or lower). You don't have to guess a particular movie, just a dollar amount. You can not guess an amount that has already been guessed by someone for this week. Once you've made a guess, you can't change it. Guesses have to be submitted by midnight the Wednesday before the opening. Guesses must be rounded to the nearest million dollars. Results will be cumulative week to week for everyone that continues to play. If you miss a week, you can still play, but your score is 125% of the worst actual score awarded on the week you missed. If you miss two weeks in a row, you're out of the metagame, but still welcome to play the weekly game. The ongoing game will reset when there's only one player left.

Please feel free to discuss prospects and speculation- this is highly encouraged. But once you post up a guess, it cannot be changed.

I'll normally post this up on the Monday before the opening weekend, and will update the cumulative scores when the actuals are released (usually Tuesday afternoon).

Hmmm... So many colleges going back this week... Does that mean old friends getting together and heading out to the local theater to beat the heat by seeing of movie? Nope... it probably means getting blind drunk and forgetting where you left your pants, and dignity, when you wake up the next afternoon...

Oh, so this is the bad weekend! Damn you anabelle something or other! Dunkirk was in second place with $10 million. I was one horror film away from deification.

Zombie wanted to talk about rules changes, and then I had some thoughts too. He proposed that we have to pick the winning movie as well. It won't be an issue most weeks, but could make it exciting for others. On the other hand, that's a huge point swing for what may be a difference of a half-million dollars. I'm neutral on this.

For the metagame- I know we have rules for when it ends, but honestly this can go on forever. I propose we start over for after the summer season ends, and have a season that goes to the end of the year. Then we start over again at the beginning of the year until the start of the summer season again. But we'd also include a lifetime score for people that keep playing every single week until that stops. That way, we don't lose our metagame, but we offer a chance for new people to jump on.
