So I've decided to have an all-powerful Q-like entity that appears in all the campaign's I run.
I'm getting ready to start a new Mutuants and Masterminds campaign for my two youngest sons, and a Pathfinder Campaign for my three oldest boys and an adult friend of ours. For the adult game, I wanted to come up with a game mechanic that would encourage players to not miss the game sessions.
Enter Tater McWhiskey. So I've talked about him before. He's an enormous leprechaun (which means he stands about 6'3"), and he's unbelievably powerful. Godlike in his power. I've developed an initial session for the Pathfinder group where they have to follow Tater McWhiskey around their new hometown all day to track him back to his pot of gold. They'll be convinced he's just a dude in a leprechaun outfit, but they'll do it anyways and it will get them around to all the different areas of this small town and introduce them to key characters. At the end of the session, they'll try to intervene with Tater and he'll toy with them for awhile. Then he'll decide that he likes this group and he's going to keep his eye on them.
So in the future, if a person can't attend a game session, that will be when Tater McWhiskey decides to drop in to their consciousness and see what the group is up to. He (meaning me) will be in total control of the character, and only has the abilities that the character does. At the end of the game session, he pops away, taking one random item with him when he goes. The character will have no memory of what happened when Tater McWhiskey was there, and will have to be told by the other players. Also, if the same player has to miss a few weeks in a row- that's just one big visit- only one lost item. Oh, and I have a terrible Irish accent. It will be hilarious.
And then I thought I'd add Tater to all my worlds because-- I just like him.

Re: Shared World Characters
Wait! So Mr. Mxyzptlk and the Great Gazoo are the same person?

Kidding aside, that's a great idea. Fun for you and motivation for them to not leave you in charge of shit. Good work.
