The Genius of Ray Charles is acting like a reverse-Otis Blue for me, where it kind of starts out middling, but then really catches fire in the second half. Deed I Do is awesome
365 album challenge
Re: 365 album challenge
Listening to Natalia LaFourcade, fun fact, "pulling thorns" in spanish is "sacando espinas" which when she says it sounds like a dirty phrase.
Here she is a possible homage to REM's "Drive", phrase 22 seconds in.

Re: 365 album challenge
I'm so behind - can't reach a place where I can sit down and listen to music for an uninterrupted hour!
Re: 365 album challenge
No worries Phoebe. There's no reward at the end, I personally I'm worried about how many earworms I'm putting in my ears. I'm also starting to miss some of my podcasts I have had to put aside for this.
I have a Drs appt next week, will make sure to bring this up.
Thought: watch a movie, count it as listening to a soundtrack

Re: 365 album challenge
I'll go haikus now:
Original Ragtime by Scott Joplin
Can't help but hear these
Loudly banging out from a
Player piano.
Joplin, ragtime king
Could craft great lil melodies,
like "Paragon Rag."
The Genius of Ray Charles by Ray Charles
Soulful stripper songs
Kidding, second half is ace,
Check out "Deed I Do"
Aja by Steely Dan
Jazz and disco rock,
All crisply produced with care,
Take their big "Black Cow"
But the best is "Peg"
Michael McDonald backing
Still my favorite.
Duran Duran by Duran Duran
Quality debut,
Are all their songs this angry?
Let's go: "Friends of Mine"
Last Splash by The Breeders
How did I miss this?
I really liked Cannonball
Was I scared of girls?
Try "No Aloha"
I'd have dug this my teen years
I dig it now too
Moon Safari by Air
Says a lot that the
worst song here was the single
grumpy Sexy Boy,
The rest are jazzy,
beautiful, downtempo songs
like "Ce Matin-Lá"
Hasta la Raíz by Natalia Lafourcade
A pleasant listen,
Good pop rock songs sung well
Will return to these.
I guess I will pick
"Mi Lugar Favorito"
joyous little song.

Re: 365 album challenge
15 minutes in and Bruno Mars is ruining a good few-week run quality albums.
Re: 365 album challenge
Skrillex anger dance,
Audio pyrotechnics,
Was not made for me
Midweek thoughts:
Tay tay is a okay
Jack White is alright
Adele is swell
MGMT is so good to me.
Bruno Mars wants to be a star,
but Sharon Jones is one.

Re: 365 album challenge
Oh, I love your poetries and wish I was not so behind on this, but such is life. A series of twenty minute installments that involve not being able to accomplish enough.
Re: 365 album challenge
36. Oracular Spectacular by MGMT
All the hits are hits
Bowie odes like “.”
Are quality too
37. Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites by Skrillex
It’s impressive but
Digital pyrotechnics
are not made for me
Maybe in a club,
with drugs, but I do neither...
“”
38. Give the People What they Want by Sharon Jones
A heartbroken loss
She gave us a ton of soul
to last a lifetime
Superb vintage sound,
But her vintage voice is best,
Try “”
39. Lazeretto by Jack White
A completest one,
And a quality addition
classic Jack White.
If you don’t know, try
“Lazeretto”, if you do
“.”
40. Red by Taylor Swift
If you have three loves:
pop, rock, and country music,
Tay Tay is your mix.
Since I like rock more,
I took to her rock songs more,
I wish there were more
Of those I would pick
The anthemic “” duet
Guess what? she’s very good.
41. Doo-Wops & Hooligans by Bruno Mars
If Bruno’s lyrics
were a little less braggy
I’d like this a lot
I guess this is pop
The songs are catchy and flawed
and I’m left shrugging
“”
Is so much fun and so dumb
Womanizer rock.
42. 25 by Adele
If I had to guess
She’ll win for best album
Because it’s damn good
“Send my Love” is swell,
but for a non-big-hit try
“”

Re: 365 album challenge
Love the haikus, lol!
Re: 365 album challenge
Since
1. I'm about to reach 180 albums, and
2. ,
thought I should share some graphs!
Albums by Year
As usual, I'm giving short shrift to the 1980s. Will try to up that, the 2017 albums, and the 50s and earlier (granted, a bunch of those "Compilations" are for artists popular in the 30s-50s. 60s and 00s may seem small, but I've heard most big albums from those eras already.
Albums by Genre
Put "Sign O the Times" under Rock, though it could have equally been Soul. Bunch o albums like that. No surprise that Rock is #1 as it was the dominant music for most of the album era (as well as my biases and those of best-albums list-makers). Happy with the amount of hip-hop and jazz. Electronic, classical, and comedy needs more. Chances are, if I listened to a soul album, it was great, so I will probably listen to more from that genre.
Another graph
Now this one, I've kinda hid the meaning, as it's a bit embarrassing (in creating, in the results, and in showing it publicly). This is broken up by gender and race, and although it's much better than what my CD collection looks like, I wish for it to be a bit better. Specifically more representation for women, which accounts for between a quarter and a third of my listens (that "MIX" is a bunch of mixes, including all musicals, that usually have better gender representation).
Anywho. Midterm report card, I'd give myself a B-. Eclectic, but not enough to overcome my prior biases.
