The very idea that some people cannot smell asparagus pee, or that others perhaps don't even metabolize it to make that smell, is a huge surprise!!!! The idea that people think it smells bad - or at least, worse than other pee! - is another shocking revelation on a par with realizing other people don't find skunk scent pleasant!!! World gone mad.
The dog obviously smells deep details in things I wish I could detect, and doesn't find the smell of poo revolting. But even his pee varies based on diet and reason for peeing. His fear pheromones are intense to the point I can smell it on his body if he's in the same room and very afraid of something. Same with aggression; you can literally smell it when he's about to get his back fur up. The frustrating thing is not being believed, but when the behavior is full predictable I guess it doesn't matter who believes.
Unless there's a gas leak and only after they come out three times does someone finally find the very real leak you've smelled for months! The last guy was awesome. He was like, once a person has smelled a small leak, I assume they're right because they know the smell and have proven they can detect it. So no surprise, he's the one who kept hunting until it was found, where the others were like, well, little lady, pat pat on the head, it all checks out... My mom has the same problem because she is one of those super smeller types, and I'm nowhere near her level. Still, it is crazy to me that others may be roaming the world without smell! Just like people roam around not visualizing their thoughts unless dreaming, or not feeling colorful pains at sudden loud sounds, or not seeing the passage of time in big colorful loops, or not seeing colors in the letters. I really can't fathom it and asparagus pee is the latest. I know some pregnant women experience this scent awakening; for me it was the foolproof sign of pregnancy. Smell your different meals in the pee? Yup, pregnant.

My wife's sense of smell is pretty sharp, and was much more intense during pregnancy as well. But I'm one of those unfortunates without a sense of smell. My sinuses get too clogged from allergies and flying, too many recurring and chronic sinus infections. At some point, when I stop traveling for work, I'll have them give me a strong course of antibiotics to clear everything up for once and all, and hopefully get back my sense of smell. But in the meantime, it's a struggle just to keep my sinuses clear enough that I don't need to be a constant mouth breather.

Re: [SC] Asparagus Pee
That is terrible. My BIL had some type of minor surgical procedure done to clear up this chronic years long sinus clogging, and my FIL uses a neti pot which he loves to demonstrate and offer to share. Don't know if these things would help. I really like my FIL btw, and these are among the reasons. Anyway, as a chronic snorer I have started using these breathing strips that appear to function by adhering the fleshy outer sides of your nose to a strong bandage, which is then pinned just beyond the nose to the crease of the cheek, so your nose stays open about a millimeter more on each side. You have probably tried this already. It's a lot of fun.

Yep, use a neti pot regularly, and using the nasal strips at night helps compensate for the deviated septum thanks to breaking my nose when I was younger (and mom being a nurse and mother of 5 kids, I didn't get the luxury of having it set properly, but just stopped the bleeding and left it semi-crooked for the rest of my life, unless I want to pay for elective cosmetic surgery). And OTC nasal sprays are a mixed blessing: they work, but when used for more than a few days in a row can actually make matters worse, in addition to increasing your blood pressure and other such side effects. So I use those when I have to fly, or when I have a particular bad cold, but otherwise try to stay away from them.

Re: [SC] Asparagus Pee
You should post us a video of your neti pot. Agreed, nasal sprays bad for long-term use, great for temporary cold or something. My husband uses one long term and I don't think it's a good idea, but it did completely wipe out his snoring and sinus issues, so who am I to judge the value? Your nose is fine; I have seen your nose and my word on such subjects is in fact Law. If you want to see a , well, , thanks to whoever did it. I don't know that you do want to see these things, but any excuse is working for me right now.
