They take the time to find pictures, etc., so that list has decent vetting. The categories they pay attention to seem to fit most of what we select. However, some names like Gary Gygax might not have made the list when clearly most here consider him a celebrity. So this wouldn't be perfect either.

Executive decision to apply to the year 2017:
You can put anyone you damn well please on your list. They only qualify for points if they show up on CNN's "Who We Lost this Year" page for 2017. According to my wife, that page is established early in the year, and they update it regularly, so you shouldn't have to wait to find out if your person's death qualifies.
If anyone would like to cross anyone off their already submitted list, let me know now, and I'll remove them from the list.
If there are serious problems with this, then we can discuss and adjust before next year's draft.

We will need to clarify Doris Day's birth year: 1924 (as she stated) or 1922 (as the census and her biographer stated).
Also, I assume the Scott Hamilton on the list is the figure skater, and not the tenor saxophonist, rugby player, or Canadian politician.
Looking at everyone on the list (plus celebrities that I note were missed off of the list that I thought I sent Mike but didn't take), it breaks down into these broad categories:
