But on a positive note, when I went to a session on quantum computing at my son's orientation weekend for college, I decided to take the professor up on his offer to ask private questions afterward because I felt like his entire talk had been extremely vague and non-specific. His talk was mostly about using quantum computing to improve encryption technology, so I asked him if people were using quantum entanglement as part of the solution to that problem and he looked at me and said, "Yeah, that's precisely what I'm doing." I then told him I was writing a science fiction story where that was part of the plot, with a lot of more far fetched things tossed in, but I was wondering how far off it was in terms of actual scientific progress. He said that they basically can't quite get there yet, but they're close...
It felt good to feel like I wasn't entirely blowing smoke...
