My wife and I went to a party with four other couples, so there were 10 people total.
During the course of the evening, some people shook hands with each other. But no person shook hands with his or her partner, and no person shook his or her own hand.
At the end of the evening, I asked everyone else at the party (including my wife), "How many distinct people did you shake hands with tonight?"
Fortunately for me, everyone had kept accurate track of that information, and to my surprise all nine of them each gave me a different answer.
How many distinct people did I shake hands with at that party? How many did my wife shake hands with?
