There must be more than this provincial life

One thing I've been noticing in musicals lately: a song sung by the lead woman character that talks about an ideal future where she'd rather be.
Sometime it works out and sometimes it doesn't, and all that seems to be based on whether it's a Disney musical or not.
So you got:
Audrey singing "Somewhere that's Green" in Little Shop of Horrors
Ariel singing "Part of This World" in The Little Mermaid
Mrs. Lovett singing "By the Sea" in Sweeney Todd
Dot singing "Color and Light" in Sunday in the Park with George
Moana singing "How Far I'll Go" in Moana
Others?

It's the classic "I Wish" song, it's an important building block for story / musicals. (In non-musical stories, there's often the same sentiment, just not in song form)
I've learned about this through musical improv training. But there was also a This American Life episode that discussed it. Here:

Forgot about this one!
This is all fascinating, I'm glad I asked about it. Now what about all the religious imagery in 80s sex pop? Is there a unified theory for that?

I wish I had a rabbit in a hat with a bat and a '64 impala.

I love Skee-Lo. I wish there had been more of his style back in the day.
