Freedom of the press is vital, but what do you do if the press is being irresponsible? Alex Jones is a trusted source for a scary amount of people.

For a society like ours it's an absolute prerequisite, but obviously not a sufficient condition. I can imagine smaller or differently organized communities where free speech would be enough and a whole system for representing and communicating news and events wouldn't be needed. Not relevant for us. But it's interesting because this is one of the big reasons why I don't think communist or true socialist-type systems can ever be good. You have to have a whole independent industry of Journalism.
In response to Willy's good question I would say you also have to have a robust system of education that achieves public goods. Personally I prefer public education, but the education certainly doesn't have to be public to fulfill that role. It sure can't be a system where truth is optional, though.
