I've heard of Harry Belafonte, even if I'm not a fan.

Harry Belafonte... yes.
Also his daughter Shari Belafonte who starred in If You Could See What I Hear back in the early 80's (?) opposite none other than the Beastermaster himself, Marc Singer.
I'm old.

Would best desciption be 1) one of the most popular singers of the 50s 2) introducer of many world music styles to western world 3) probably one of the 5 or so famous black actors pre-1980 4) helped organize the March on Washington and We are the World.
or just simply "he sings Day-O"
My daughter LOVES harry belafonte. She requests it all the time for sleep music, particularly Day O, or anything from Calypso, which is a great album. So are his two Live at Carnegie Hall albums, which showcase his ability to adapt to different music styles.
Eg. currently obsessed with his version of La Bamba which is both slower and faster than Richie Vallens' version. Lovely whistful, then fun sound collage, turned upbeat dance song.

If the world were ever to face an apocalypse, and I was responsible for creating a new religion, his performance of "Turn the World Around" on the Muppet Show would be one of the fundamental sacred texts.

I only know him from
Day-O
Jump in the Line
and that one Christmas song
but he has an excellent voice, imo.
