I've been reading Neil Sheehan's "A Bright Shining Lie." I'm only about a third of the way through (it's pretty long), but it's quite good. It provides a lot of background to the U.S. involvement in Vietnam that I didn't know--like how Diem came to power, and how the U.S. experience in the Philipines distorted U.S. views of Vietnam.
