THE FOREIGNER
Jackie Chan tries for his Taken role as a rogue IRA cell starts a bombing campaign that claims the life of Chans daughter. Pierce Brosnan plays a representative of Ireland that is attempting to negotiate with all parties involved and avoid being karate kicked by Jackie Chan.

Despite what the trailers make you think, this is a PIERCE BROSNAN movie that also happens to have some chop suey via CHAN who is still delightful to see do what he does best on the big screen. Despite that tho, this is a story about a politician who is trying to play a complicated game of alliances, not a pure revenge story.

Mostly OK tho, *** out of *****

Not really a review, but Mark Wahlberg says he's prayed for forgiveness for starring in Boogie Nights. It's been a while since I saw that movie, but I did not find it to be a glorification of the porn industry. The guy's life rides high for a bit, then he crashes and burns, taking other lives with him. Am I remembering that wrong?

No, your memory is fine. It was a non-glorification imo.

The Wolf Man (1941)

Just a SUPER pretty movie to look at, one of the few universal classic monster movies that I have somehow not seen and its just a visual treat. I kind of love the WOLF MAN straight up strangles people, looks so cool, perfect film for the season ***** out of *****

Lady Bird lived up to the hype. A damn near perfect movie with some unfortunate moments of comedy that don't really fit with the rest of the film. And one character revelation seemed a bit to on the nose. But other than those tiny nitpicks, one of the best films of the year

Van Helsing 2016

A Canadian-American venture that is set in a post apocalyptic pacific Northwest-Seattle has some great roles as scenery in this show. The main character "Vanessa VanHelsing" wakes up after a several year coma to discover Vampires have taken over the world after a super volcano spews enough debris into the sky to dampen the naturally occurring sun light to safe levels for them. Following a formula that is one part Walking Dead survivors interaction, and another part I refer to as the Buffy verse interactions. The show never made it to air, and Netflix picked it up. So there's only one season of 13 episodes to get through.

It suffers in several areas-most of which come down eve with a great budget they can't get too fancy, but they're pretty ambitious. Bad acting-not intentionally I think, just a lot of people trying to make it work with little experience. And a plot that has been tried uncountable times. To the point where you start referring to the show in terms of other shows.

All in all it was fun, and I'd say like a 6 out 10.

Talking about Canadian TV in this thread is extremely triggering to me

A Chorus Line

Some fantastic supporting roles, and a sometimes entertainingly energetic Michael Douglas, I spent much of this film second-guessing all decisions. Why did they cut every song that mentioned boners? Oh yeah, they probably didn't want an R rating. But still, this decision cut a number of very funny songs, all for sake of more melodrama. Also, I've never seen the stage play, so I dunno how they normally frame the director, but I wonder how this film would have done if Michael Douglas was hidden via-voiceover for at-least the first act.

Also, usually in my musical appreciation I realize why some classic songs are truly classics, like Send in the Clowns or Oklahoma for example. But "One" ("singular sensation") is still rather annoying afterwards.

Meh!

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
A often hilarious but also tragic look into the lives of a group of broken characters as they all deal with loss and tragedy in their own way. A all star cast pretty much nails it top to bottom with perhaps MVP going to Woody Harrelson who will just...its just a stunning performance. Some have suggested that a certain characters redemption arc is far to easy but this character literally and figuratively has to travel through fire/hell to achieve that so I'm not sure....yea I don't want to get into any specifics but this is a must see film

***** out of *****

BRIGHT on Netflix is actually a ton of fun and yea, totally worth your life minutes this holiday weekend. GOOD ORC BAD COP should be a genre that takes off and has one movie a year.

"The Big Sick" is really damned good. It's really funny, even in some rather dark moments, but it's also very well acted and the characters all have depth not seen in a lot of comedies.

On Christmas night, which happened to be really cold, finally snuggled exhausted into bed with the two little kids and watched The Young Victoria, which is a Netflix movie but those are sometimes pretty darn good. This one played the same note over and over, but it was a good note and well-played, about how a guy can be a very good husband, so that was fine. A very nice movie for a Christmas night - boring and quiet for the kids, who went to sleep, and pleasantly relaxing for the mom, who watched it and then went to sleep. Highly recommended 3 star for peaceful night.

Today watched a movie called Margot at the Wedding. I watched it because it starred Jennifer Jason Leigh, Nicole Kidman, and Jack Black. Well, I said, well well well. And then: Ciaran Hinds, who is the picture of hotness. How can this go wrong, I asked myself. I should have been able to guess several ways, having watched movies before. Anyway, this movie SUCKS, but it has a purpose: you'll feel like a really nice, ethical, sane person by comparing your life to what's happening in the film. How can people like this be real? What woman would EVER have written this steaming pile of shit about two adult sisters, I wondered? Answer: some dude wrote it, of course. Sorry to be sexist but there it is - that was the honest Q and subsequent A in my mind. Not that some dude couldn't have written a better version; just that there was no way a woman, much less one with a real sister, would have caused this crime against words and characterizations. Then I was like, I'll bet he is also a fancy dude who went to a fancy but also subpar sort of college. Correct again. Sorry, it's mean but true. Movie was the evidence. 1 star for shirtless Jack Black and a glimpse, however stilted and stunted, of the beautiful Ciaran Hinds.

The Shape of Water. Pretty fine filmmaking. Easily top tier GDT. Certainly his most intimate film. Reminded me of HUGO in its romanticism

I look forward to this one a great deal! It surely promises to improve upon A Dogwalker's Christmas, if that is indeed the name of the movie I saw this morning/last night on Netflix, possibly a Netflix creation, or possibly not. Somehow I put my name on the sign-up sheet for bad Netflix movies about white ladies finding romance at Christmastime via implausible and annoying events.
