Re: Would you have another kid?
Sorry if I was cryptic. Sure, I'd be willing to raise more children. They are expensive, if you want them not to be disadvantaged and you want to more easily avoid (no guarantees) negative choices afforded by idleness, they require funding. This is usually provided by work, which takes time away fro...

Re: Rank the MCU movies
generally, not a fan. There's a slow churn in my head that pits occasional good lines "Built it in a cave, with a box of scraps!" vs total physics model violations, and character inconsistencies. Not enough good lines. The whole franchise is losing me the way comic books lost me: The paral...
Re: Trump
Martha was convicted of breaking into the mens' room. Her pardon is only consequential to the women who somehow want to rationalize their support for this scary clown, and frankly have no other traction. The other pardons attempt to normalize and diminish behavior that someone is likely to be punish...

Re: Putting an animal down.
Coming back into this late, but several notes: Opossums get a bad rap because they are plain. They are among the least likely animals to either fight with your pet or spread rabies. On the other hand, they eat ticks and other things we dislike. Pick on skunks, foxes, raccoons if you must. They all h...

Re: Do Families Matter?
There are at least two facets to this, which are really different threads. Families are important the way molecules are important. They're the first building block to bigger, more complex things. In families we have our first defined roles and responsibilities, which we will need when we form bigger...

Re: Why so much Autism?
An MIT researcher found a correlation of autism with use of Roundup that was pretty close. She had no funding available for a follow-up study to check for causation.

Re: Alfie - the right to die?
The parents are responsible for the kid, he's theirs. If he breaks a window with a baseball, if he runs away, if he ends up in the emergency room. Unless what they are doing is specifically endangering him or otherwise provably causing harm, the state generally defers that it's the parents' call, so...
Re: Guns
Weird how a program fails a single child and it ought to be revisted or scrapped, while gun ownership is sacred and immune to criticism. Chicago has poorly written laws. The penalties for gun possession are less than the penalty exacted by the gang for surrendering the gun, for example. Nothing huma...

Re: Putting an animal down.
The older I get, the less I feel anybody has a right to incarcerate an animal. Folks whose dogs live in boxes, folks whose animals are surrounded by concrete...there's something broken about the whole picture. It's not a stuffed animal. Maybe robots will fill that void, but that opens up entirely ne...

Re: Tax Deductions
K-marts business model evolved. They used to be five and dimes, and when they went big, they looked for markets where there wasn't much going on. Walmart purposely undercut established local markets in order to create micro , local monopolies. s they exploded, they dishonestly claimed to have primar...

Re: Tax Deductions
https://xkcd.com/980/ Another huge problem is the sequestering of a ton of money that never really does the economy any good, which used to be shaken loose somewhat by estate taxes. If a billionaire spent proportionately, I'd have no issue, but one can only buy so many pairs of pants or hamburgers,...

Re: Tax Deductions
There is a fundamental disconnect in our economy between value added and wealth collected. We have, among other things, inflated the 'value' of risk (and frequently exaggerated the actual risk) in business ventures. This creates a structural imbalance that allows folks who add absolutely no value, o...
Re: Trump
Not unhappy to be losing speaker Hindenburg. Ironic how he says 'It's about my family,' because the utterance of that that sticks in my head is the audio recording of him and other party leaders deciding to pretend they knew nothing about Flynn and Manafort, et al. His recommendation was that the in...

Favorite easy dinner these days: Stop at the local BJs or Wegmans grocery for one of their already grilled chickens, whole. 4.99. Three meals, or two for two folks if you add rice or pasta.

Re: Trump
His "base" must be completely millionaires, because that's the only group consistently benefiting from actual policy shifts. His cultish followers get lip service, nothing more, poor sods. I've moved from contempt to pity. Liberals have either been voyeuristic-ally watching his half centur...
