I think the most important part of the barriers is that they should be transient. It will get to the point where it would be impossible to go anywhere or make any kind of play when the board becomes clogged.

So, here's my idea... I love this sort of thing. We associate one color with one aspect of godhood. Poseidon's cards are blue, but in a Japanese expansion Ohoyamatsumi could be blue as well... simply differentiate the backs of the cards with expansion symbols. The only scenario that fits 5 players in this model are if no one defends a goal... 5 player FFA, all goals score 3 for the scorer and 1 for everyone else. It's simply a race scenario. I'm not sure how that would play, but it would be fun to watch.
