It boggles my mind, honestly. And I'm a pretty conservative guy in a lot of ways.

Re: Heathers

Maybe because we don't always need to read about nice things? Lord of The Flies, like Animal Farm, is an excellent example of the ugliness of humanity, and it's something we see on a daily basis. Just like Of Mice and Men. It's a brutal nasty world we live in.

Re: Trump

Most definitely. The Tea Party definitely drove me away from the Republican party. They campaigned on a psuedo-libertarian platform, as well as a jobs creation platform. Then when they got in power, they started going for abortion. WHAT THE FUCK GUYS?! "The government that governs best is that ...

Re: National Service and Drafting Women

I think it's reasonable. Selective Service is a joke, anyway. We're most likely never going to need it. Unless Canada invades.

Re: Trump

Because the Republicans(alongside centrist moderate Democrats) have spent the last... 40 years lying to the American people. Wages have stagnated, while production has gone up, capturing the capital in the top-end. The Lower-middle class blue-collar families have had less to spend, while all costs h...

Re: National Service and Drafting Women

It would have to be some form of existential threat. Anything less would make draftees less efficient than volunteers. There is an upper bound on how many people we can air or sealift to a theater. I am not sure what it is exactly, but it's probably low enough that relying on volunteers would be a b...

Re: National Service and Drafting Women

In the event of a war massive enough to require a draft to supplement our considerable all-volunteer force, baby bursting(I agree, it's too hilarious not to use) isn't really an issue. Such a war would be one of an existential nature, and those babies will not be able to wield bamboo spears or rifle...

Cthulhu. It's always a mountain sized demon beast with writhing tentacles.

Re: [Deep Thoughts]You Take Them Both and Then You Have

I mean, "better" starts getting into a serious of trade-offs when you are talking about anything past fission and fusion torches. An antimatter pion drive is really nice, but the plume of radiation it leaves for astronomical units might be a bit of a negative for near earth travel. I mean,...

Re: [Deep Thoughts]You Take Them Both and Then You Have

Nuclear rockets. FINALLY. I've been belaboring this point for a decade or so(THANK YOU GURPS!), and they finally released a press release detailing their research into them, and the press release pretty much said: "Yeah, this is the only way to get to mars. ". Thank the lord! No more ridic...

Re: [Deep Thoughts] Listen to Yourself Churn

Fortunately, we are closer than ever. There's some really amazing gains in fusion research(around the beginning of the year I got to smoke weed with a guy who works at Oak Ridge, I think, making superconductors. Fascinating conversations about Tokamaks), and NASA ha finally admitted I am right, and ...

Meh. It's gonna take a while. I'm not sure that we're gonna see human level AI anytime soon, which means that a human who is assisted by AI will be able to out think any AI. AI is particularly good at singular tasks, but what about innovation?

Re: Parenting Question

The sleep thing is probably a lost battle. I haven't been able to get to sleep before 11 to 12 for about... 15 years now. So, maybe that's just his or her's sleep cycle, and if that's the case... Well, that's what it is. I woke up at 4:41 this morning, and... I've been going pretty strong with minim...

Re: [Deep Thoughts] Listen to Yourself Churn

I really don't think any one thing can possibly cause human extinction. Planet Killer? Well, as you pointed out, Mike(thanks for mansplaining. Jeez!), if it doesn't hit us in a narrow window of time where we cannot prepare for it, there's little reason to believe we couldn't neutralize the threat. I...
