Re: Democrats
He can't even commit to NOT vetoing a Medicare for All bill. That's not a half-truth, and it's extremely disappointing however you spin it. If Biden wants as many people as possible to have healthcare coverage and thinks healthcare is a right, his platform certainly doesn't demonstrate it. It's a pr...
Re: Democrats
I think that mischaracterizes my intent. There's a difference between not being motivated by "hope and change" and saying you are voting against it. Fair enough. Regardless, I think you are 100% right. A vote for Biden is certainly a vote for "normalcy" i.e. the status quo befor...
Re: Democrats
When asked, "If your candidate loses, will you still vote for the other guy in the general?" Most Sanders supporters said yes they would vote for Biden. Way less of the Biden supporters said they would vote for Sanders. In fact many said that of Sanders was the nominee, they'd either vote...
Re: Democrats
I'll hold my nose and vote for him, just like I did Clinton in 2016, essentially purely for SCOTUS reasons. Then I'll still be blamed for it when this weak candidate who inspires absolutely nobody - I've literally never heard a single person advocate for him on policy grounds - loses. So depressing....

Re: [MEOW] Blue Velvet
I think it's interesting that even Sandy has a bit of a voyeur streak into her - she listens in on her father's investigations and it doesn't take too much nudging to get her to play along. She's definitely Wholly Good, and is never really tempted or corrupted by that underbelly like Jeffrey...but s...

Re: [MEOW] Blue Velvet
I am a Lynch fan and while I still like this movie, I have always been a bit surprised that it has become his canonical work. It's also genuinely provocative and this is a film I wouldn't begrudge people from shutting off if it's not for them. Ebert famously loathed it, even later in his career when...

Re: What's your favorite song of 1985?
Feels lame picking this since it's the top result on the consensus best albums list, but hard for me to think of a better song from 1985 than Hounds of Love.
Born in the USA would be up there too.

52 By Women 2020 #6 - Can You Ever Forgive Me Lives up to its reputation, an excellent blend of comedy and drama. A hall-of-fame level screen duo. Two relatively contemptible people you can't help but root for, even if you'd hate them if they were in your life. A perfect ending. Looking forward to ...

Re: [MEOW] Ronin
We will just have to agree to disagree. The romance (which again, I agree is shoddily written and easily the film's biggest flaw) is such an afterthought I don't see it at all as her only purpose, or even her primary one, especially considering she kicks off the entire plot by getting the gang toget...

Re: [MEOW] Ronin
11/10 car chases (Ronin actually makes the reverse chase work, since the speed of the chases always feels realistic in this one), 10/10 cast. 6/10 overly convoluted MacGuffin pursuit, but it all works in service of setting up the chases and the shifting loyalties. I think McElhone's character and pe...

Re: [MEOW] Coherence
Kind of a mixed bag for me. Not really a fan of Puzzle Box movies/TV shows that are more interested in telling a riddle than a story, and I felt like Coherence fell into this trap, with WAY too many scenes of characters reading off wiki pages as exposition. For example, I'm sure those abrupt cuts si...

Re: [MEOW] Stalag 17
Posting this separately as it really isn't a criticism or anything, but more that I'm curious. Maybe I missed it, but there is absolutely no mention of the Holocaust or even any reference at all to the broader context of the war. The WW2 backdrop simply provides the guards v. prisoners setup. If any...

Re: [MEOW] Stalag 17
Watched this last night. So I'm a pretty big noob when it comes to movies this old, I'll admit, but for the most part I liked it alot. I'll start with the thriller aspect. It was genuinely really tight and well-constructed. Maybe I'm stupid, but I actually fell for the misdirect and scratched off Pr...

2019 Top 10 Movies
Post your top 10 (or any other number) of 2019! Personally I think it was a phenomenal year, the top three made it in my top 20 for the decade: 1. Parasite (by a whisker over #2 and subject to change) 2. The Irishman 3. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood 4. Under the Silver Lake 5. Uncut Gems 6. The Ligh...

Apologies to everyone and especially Tahlvin for skipping High Spirits - got busy for the holidays and trying to catch up on 2019 movies I missed (check out Uncut Gems when you have the chance).
