Re: [Deep Thoughts] Red Pill Blue Pill
Unless you're going full on brain-in-a-jar, "I think therefore I am says nothing about you" - the fact that most of us have some commonality to our impressions of the world is evidence that while we can't see the elephant, we're looking at something that is more than subjective but filtere...
Re: Trump
Current narrative from the alt-right is that the counter protesters had been attacking cars prior to the incident, maybe even the driver who plowed into the crowd.

Re: North Korea's Crimes
We have a complicated history with Pakistan. I suggest reading Charlie Wilson's War about some of it. We have needed them in one way or another for a while, and having a friendly Muslim nation bordering Afghanistan and Iran is useful. But they, like Best Korea are an aid-based economy. Pakistan is b...

Re: [Deep Thoughts] Nature or Nurture
Human nature is certainly not constant. We've had a major reduction in crime that is linkable to the simple fact that we've reduced human lead exposure over the last several decades. But then again, twin studies show that twins separated at birth tend to have a lot of similarities that crossover the...
Re: Trump
Weirdly, though I find the man incredibly suspect, I'm trying to look at the policies actually going into place. The RAISE act is...being framed well in some circles. Prioritize people that can hit the ground running over people that will struggle to adapt. I KNOW that some but not all of the suppor...
Re: Crying
My wife doesn't connect with movies that much, I'm the one that cries. Have definitely noticed an increase as I've gotten older. Well, I'm usually kind of a crier, when it comes to sappy crap on TV and in movies. The thing that is odd, and that my kids found fairly disturbing, is how stoic I am abou...

Re: Movie Review Thread
The Founder See the rise of McDonald's focusing on Ray Kroc. Michael Keaton is still on his career upswing and I'm loving every role I've seen him in lately. (Think that's three since Birdman, but still). The film chooses to be pretty honest about the man. I sympathized with him a lot, even with som...

Re: Something you SHOULD be into but just can't
To be fair, that was analysis by a Cracked writer specifically talking about things she finds overrated. I was trying to point out the self service in her points about musical simplicity, but I forgot to show the steps in my head. I like several Beatles songs, but that breakdown gave me another way ...

So, at work...don't do this?
Just kidding, we're all in uniform at my job. If it's not a self-aid buddy care situation or a promotion, no touchie.

Re: Public Shaming
While I'm not a fan of the Alt Right meme factories, the term "virtue signalling", as overused as it is, applies to the Lena Dunham tweet. That story has nothing about her making any situation better. She's just letting the world know how good she is by displaying her disdain for people wi...

Re: Something you SHOULD be into but just can't
I hear you on Doctor Who. I've tried. David Tennant is cute. It bores me. I feel bad. I should probably enjoy the Beatles more than I do, but they're always merely okay. No passion for it. No thrills. No profundity. Don't think Game of Thrones counts because ain't nobody should be enjoying that, ye...

Re: [Deep Thoughts] Strange Sacrifice
There's a great 21 Pilots song called "Ride" that digs into similarly deep thoughts: "Who would you live for, who would you die for, and would you ever kill?" Apparently some people even have a list of those for whom they would take a bullet, though few bullets are coming throug...

More seriously, I'd prefer to not be alone, but I'm also not sure if I want to put my family through that on their end.

Re: Trump
In the 90s I was on team GOP. I say team, because I switched teams in college (haha, in a political sense), and a lot that I fussed about was team sports shit. I'm glad, looking back that Bill Clinton wasn't impeached, and although I still dunno if I like him, I sure like many of his policies (I li...

Re: Education in Fantasy Fiction
Definitely a common trope, but not exclusive. LotR doesn't have that, but to be fair, that series would barely fall into the "classic fantasy" category that it helped to create. It's an exceedingly low magic setting (outside of the films)...at least in presentation, anyway. While Gandalf ...

Re: Education in Fantasy Fiction
It's been a while since I tried reading them, but the Malazan Book of the Fallen series might not have started with learning scenes. The first book also didn't seem interested in the reader understaning what the hell was going on, either. So there's that.

Totally read that as "the people that he was interviewing were in there for research" and wondered what research is worth spending life in prison.
That situation sucks.

Re: Listener Betrayal 188!
You're working afterhours in an office. While using the urinal, you realize that this needs to actually be a "multi-function" trip and you need the stall. Obviously, you finish at the urinal, BUT...do you bother closing your pants for the five step trip to the toilet? Asking for a friend. ...
