Re: Trigger Warnings
That's exactly why the old people got upset: because it was no longer a brief, informative message aimed at functional adults. Instead it became, "you can't talk about this freely without warning people, who need to be shielded from everything associated with this topic, and may even be done a...

Re: Trigger Warnings
"The following contains material that may be upsetting to some viewers." We've had "trigger warnings" for most of my life and nobody had a problem until it had a neat label that old people could use to bash on theses kids today. But yes, being able to opt out of curriculum seems ...

Re: What unpopular opinion do you hold?
I think the intent is for this thread to be a bit bumper sticker, but maybe spur new thread generation if a topic suggests itself.

Re: You'll go down in history
No one will remember any modern music in 100 or 1000 years. I understand what you’re saying, but your subjective opinions about the Beatles are tainting your view of their objective, universal appeal. Kids today (16 and younger) might know who the Beatles are but couldn’t name a single song. In 100...

Re: What unpopular opinion do you hold?
The political instinct to capitalize on unfolding tragedy and "strike while the iron is hot" is a ghoulish and ultimately backfiring tactic in this day and age. The Las Vegas shooting had nothing to do with silencers/suppressors, so tweeting about that is blatantly political and confuses t...

Re: What unpopular opinion do you hold?
I was reminded of this from a Fox news article about how Democrats are attacking the tax plan for it's potential to explode the debt: Your political party does not care about the national debt. I can say that without knowing who you vote for. They will always complain about it when out of power and ...

Re: Reading Journal
Just finished Fire and Frost. I haven't read a Shadowrun book in a while, and I'm having trouble judging it. My attention span is waning and I'm trying to get back into regular reading, but I really felt like parts of the book were glossed over in a way that made the ending confusing. Problem might ...

Re: Let's Close 3/4 of the Universities and Ruin Lives and Maximize Inequality Even Further
Any consideration for eliminating or heavily curtailing student loans? I think the rise of debt financed college has contributed to the rise in tuition and the willingness of people to pursue degrees with insufficient consideration of what they will do with them.* People tend to treat physical cash ...

Re: What unpopular opinion do you hold?
I think transgenders should be treated with respect, not be afraid of suffering lack of employment and treated with the same respect as anyone else and perhaps even afforded special legal protection due to the horrendous statistics showing the amount of violence they suffer. But I will never consid...
Re: Trump
Conservative anger isn't some Trump thing, really. I'm old enough that I remember Rush Limbaugh being a "new" thing, when I first started hearing LIBERAL! thrown around as a pejorative and liberals equating to communists. They've been pissed at taxes (even when they don't pay them, because...

Phone lines have been available for a long time, but you still had to get to the phone. Now we're at a place where most people have cell phone connection. You can theoretically have constant communication for voting now that you didn't have 10 years ago. You can now reach into your pocket, see the e...
Re: Trump
Sounds like stream of consciousness. I think he recently got a deep dive briefing on the PR situation and hasn't synthesized it yet. So it's a bunch of facts with no priority attached. It's like he's trying to be sympathetic, but can't keep it together. I think my favorite response so far was someon...

Re: Movie Review Thread
Just saw Kingsman: The Golden Circle. I enjoyed it, but my favorite moments are mostly spoilers. It's a decent continuation of the first movie, so if you liked the first one, you'll like this. Saw it in IMAX, which I haven't done in forever. Villain is goofy with a plan that I almost root for.

Re: Race Bait Distractions
I guess that's my cue, Phoebe. Not sure that it's race baiting. I think he just likes sounding tough on things that get his base riled up. Now the multiple-time draft dodger gets to play patriot, offer up some kind of violence to the Left (which makes his base happy), and distract from the failure t...

Re: [Deep Thoughts] Don't Know Much About History
When I was a kid, I saw a zebra in a travelling petting zoo. It was in a pen with a donkey, and the people running the zoo claimed that the donkey was there to get the zebra on the truck. Apparently, zebra don't go anywhere that doesn't already have an animal in it, because that tells them it's dang...

Freedom of the press is vital, but what do you do if the press is being irresponsible? Alex Jones is a trusted source for a scary amount of people.

Of the three, I'd guess psychology, but that's still pretty limited.
Then again, my approach is talking to strangers on the internet and working to empathize with differing viewpoints. YMMV.

Re: Trump
It's not that she wrote a book. She's written other books, like It Takes a Village and Stronger Together. I don't recall any major outcry about those. But I also can't recall many election losers writing books AFTER. Beforehand, sure. That's part of the ecosystem, it lets the candidate get more in-d...
