2. rehabilitation
3. punishment
1 makes the most sense. These people have done harm to society and to protect society they must be removed from society.
2 also makes sense. Like a recall of a car, got to fix these people before allowing them back on the road.
3 is an understandable purpose, but clouds the first two once people enter prison. Is being raped in prison protecting our society? Is it rehabilitating them? Ideally 1 is not just protection from society but their protection too? A supermax would solve that, but it's punishing isolation would essentially give up on rehabilitation.
