I think the issue is that it's the pop charts -- which at this point I still think is catering to greatest generation folks who love a slow romantic song to woo lovers or otherwise relax to in the evening around the fire -- pre hit-the-hay or roll-in-the-hay music.

A commenter on my Twitter project put it well recently, "A lot of painfully cheesy songs... but I have fond memories of my grandma singing a lot of these numbers to me as a kid."

May I interest you in the Billboard's top country song of 1949

A precursor to Biggie's "Big Poppa" with his "I love it when she calls me sweet daddy" -- and contains the rather shocking lyric, "she'll do me she'll do you she's got that kind of lovin'"

Or there's also the R&B charts, which weren't called the R&B charts but nevertheless, the top 5 songs of 1949 were....

Paul Williams - The Hucklebuck
Charles Brown - Trouble Blues
Louis Jordan - Saturday Night Fish Fry

Of these, I gotta most rep Saturday Night Fish Fry, an over five-minute epic Rock and Roller about never seeing so much scufflin and shufflin til the break of dawn -- which is all humorous and rockin' but when the police raid the festivities for no clear reason, and also for no clear reason attack Louis physically and arrest him, you can't help but think of race relations, then and now.

My one grandfather played sax and clarinet in a big band-era band, and met my grandmother at a concert hall they played at (she was always sneaking in and watching the concerts). It was about a decade or so earlier than this, but I certainly enjoy some of this music because it reminds me of my grandparents.

After quite a few duds in a row thankfully the final one is a pretty good one -- a well-written story song that cares about atmosphere -- has a cinematic sound -- surprised it never became the basis of a film. Love the echo! 8/10
