Oye. Love and hate, legendary and annoying, pop perfection and sometimes the last thing I want to hear.

Man, 1999, full of songs I love and hate, that are legendary and annoying, that are pop perfection and sometimes the last thing I want to hear.

Gonna just keep repeating these lines for 99, I obviously have a complicated relationship with my senior year in HS. Love it, fun to play on guitar, but probably would rather not hear it for another decade. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I always felt J Lo was undeserving of her singing career. I feel the same way about post-No Doubt Gwen Steffani. Like they capitalized on something different (acting and a band) to become the face for mega producers. I need to find some male examples of this.

1999 - how is it possible Britney and Christina have not been around longer than this? Yet that's 20+ years ago! 1999 was the year I discovered my abiding love for AC/DC and realized it was a love of surpassing pureness and simplicity, and I had never been comfortable enough with myself yet to realize it fully. I know this because it was the year we lived in an apartment downstairs from kids who used to have massive parties where they blasted AC/DC for hours, and we had a standing agreement that if they let us come up and have a drink at such times, we would not complain about their prodigious noise. So AC/DC became the life soundtrack and I realized their true greatness. Thank you, college sophomores from Small Town, for helping my life as effectively as anything.

Where is the ubiquitous "Smooth"? That was 99, but maybe didn't hit til 00?
Oh "Time of Your Life Good Riddance" too... surprised we never saw that one.

Any time the solution is "banjo rifle", I'm in 100%.

Dang. All Star / Angel / Smooth isn't the best three-in-a-row quality-wise but for lasting cultural impact, maybe!

Re: Deathless
Lisa and I loved this song at the time. I don't remember where we were at, but we were hanging out with Peter (maybe at Phoebe's wedding? Maybe when we played Pariah? I don't know.) And this song came up in conversation, and Peter said, "is that the song where Eddie Vedder removes all the range from his voice, like he's trying to sing one note for the whole song?" I said yes, and he said thoughtfully, "Yeah, it's not bad."
I still don't know if he was being sarcastic or not. I suspect yes.
