I don't want to hear it multiple times a day for over a year, but once in a while, this song is more than welcome to my ear holes. It's great

I like braggadocio in moderation
Otherwise I go loco, get aggravatin'
But I don't wanna be mean, no, don't be hatin'

I did not know, until a few years ago, that the word after Hotstepper is "murderer". I loved the song, and would sing along loudly to it, just faking some nonsense syllables into that space. I can't remember what I used to sing, but it was something like 'worder-up'. And then about a decade ago on the podcast The Bugle (a news show hosted by John Oliver and Andy Zaltzman), John Oliver started singing Hotstepper, and when he got to that part he sang EXACTLY the words I always sang. I didn't think anything of it, but his producer stopped him and asked, "Wait, what did you just say?" John tried again, and then the producer rightly made fun of him and corrected, "It's MURDERER. Have you even listened to the rest of the song?" John, fully embarrassed, puzzled this over and concluded that this indeed made it a completely different song for him. And I was right there with him, feeling really stupid, but also gaining a new appreciation for Hotstepper.

Still love the song.

I loved the Zaltzman/Oliver Bugle days. Do you know they reunited for a show in December? Had the same magic.

1995 is dominated by POC-leads in many different genres, "I Believe" being pure piano ballad pop.

Wait, there's a non-dirty version of this song? TLC owned '95, damn.

I knew that, but I hesitated on listening, because I was worried it would let me down. And then I just plain forgot to go back. Thank you for the reminder!

A double thank you, Pete! I am five minutes in, and John is rattling off snowplow names, and I haven't laughed this hard in a long time. I miss this chemistry so much!

Pretty solid year. Starting next year I went all-in on The Beatles and began playing guitar, so I wonder how much I'll recognize. My guess is: still most.

I loved the snowplow puns, and I'm glad it wasn't just me because of my Syracuse bias :-)

So, maybe proof that my coming thaw in hit recognizing is coming. This was one of the biggest hits of all time, it's very good, but I vaguely remember it.

Though this exercise I've better understood the success of Mariah Carey and how she's the most successful solo act of all time. Yeah, she's got a lot of hits, and they seem to improve in quality over time (unless I'm just getting more on their wavelength)

I grew up unappreciative of her impressive vocal tracks, but still kinda unimpressed with the accompanying track, which says nothing more to me than "slow dance to this."

Yup, it's official, 1996 must have been when I left top 40 radio for the alternative, classic rock, and oldies stations. I don't remember this song.

Very 80s until the chorus which has the campfire singalong hook that kills (in both positive and negative ways)
