The 12 Hour Deathless Thread
Re: The 12 Hour Deathless Thread
Heck, I was doing a mix of rhyming, posting a place name that started with the last letter of the previous post, or posting whatever struck my fancy at the time. You know, just enjoying a respite from having to post a theme all the time.

Trees, ranked. 1. Sugar Maple
This is it, folks, the Queen of All Trees, the perfect tree, the ultimate tree, the best of the best, the tree of all trees. The Sugar Maple is the most beautiful of trees in both shape and color - and sometimes in autumn it manages to be green, vivid red, vivid orange, and gold all at once! Its leaves are softer, rounder, and fuller even than other maple leaves. It produces one of the best products a tree can produce: Maple Syrup. It is equally lovely whether alone or in large groups rolling across the entire landscape. It creates lovely hardwood forests and its wood is durable and incredibly beautiful. Its subvarieties with whorls or birdseye patterns are prized for everything from furniture to the finest musical instruments. Its seeds are pretty and unobtrusive. It supports wildlife. What else can be said? Plant more sugar maples, particularly if you're anywhere with nice soil in the US or Canada.
Let's start with a green one so you don't think this is only about pretty colors, because this perfect tree is perfect at any time in any shade:
Then the fall colors:

Led Zeppelin songs, ranked. 83/83. Your Time is Gonna Come
Wretched lyrics, shit song. Why did they bother?
Note: this ranking takes into account the main songs released on the original versions of the major studio albums, plus a few b-sides that have become so well known that they are regularly still played on the radio (e.g. Hey Hey What Can I Do?). Otherwise, no new stuff, no deluxe editions, just old fashioned original albums and all their songs, plus a small bit.

Re: The 12 Hour Deathless Thread
One labor day in my youth a local radio station did Led Zeppelin A to Z and I taped the whole thing. Then spent months relistening on my long bus rides. So I got opinions and looking forward to this!
I do like the dynamics of this song at times but the chorus is just so nothing. Not my least favorite, most from later albums land there, but completely apt last placer

Seriously, what the hell is wrong with these people? Also seems kind of racist to me, and this won't be the last time that gets said.

The out of tune howling, the plodding song structure, the lyrics, all come together in a truly ugly mess.

It's one thing to have a bad musical idea - namely, relentlessly grating layers of synthesizer slapped atop a plodding rock drone - but it's a whole other thing to make people endure it for over ten minutes. I could have given this song a pass because the lyrics aren't as bad as others we shall encounter (although who the hell knows what it's about), but TEN MINUTES of this! I'd rather have a bikini wax.

My least favorite on In Through the Out Door. You're doing everyone a favor by not sharing these

What the $%&# is this $#&@, guys? There's a moment about midpoint through the song where you can hear a struggle, possibly through a curtain of drug-addled haze, to reach across to an interesting musical idea. We get about sixteen seconds of a good part, they play around with this notion kind of like drunk hacky sack players failing at a pass, and then %$#@ it up and head right back to the idiotic remainder of this 5 minute song that is seriously 4:45 seconds too long. Intolerably bad.
Also, darn right I'm not sharing any of this mess until we get to the portion of the list I would consider "good but disappointing in some way" or "good but not really great". Thankfully true greatness appears later.

Good late afternoon.
Re: The 12 Hour Deathless Thread
My first big disagreement, because this is a top 20 Zep, IMO, I gave it a 91/100 in my quick-and-dirty rankings this morning. They try new sounds and it totally works for me. Best song an a very mixed album
Re: The 12 Hour Deathless Thread
Ahhh, crap, I can't keep doing this.
Re: The 12 Hour Deathless Thread
Well, although I put it where I put it and have lots of other favorites before it on this particular album, I do at least get where you're coming from. It's experimental, it doesn't rip off some other blues artist or have crap/disturbing lyrics, and it gives them a different kind of sound. So I like that as a project even if I don't like the particular outcome. In short I approve of your disapproval of my disapproval.

Led Zeppelin songs, ranked. 77. Sick Again
Yes, it certainly does seem they are sick, as well as sick on multiple occasions. At least the song seems to be aware of the problem. It's got some grungy straightforward rocker value but not enough to impress me as opposed to depress me.
I also remember listening to this when I was about 16, 17 and wondering ... what the f***? I just didn't have the conceptual apparatus necessary to make sense of it all.

Although it's interesting insofar as Plant jumps right in a singing from the start, and the lyrics have some good moments, the overall structure falls flat and is overburdened by organ sounds and super-boring guitar compared to their other songs. Blah.
