The quest to get one in ten. This is the closest I have come only because in one step I had to choose between write or trite and I chose the wrong one. Still have not got one in 10 tries.

I think 10 tries is going to be like a 2 in the regular version, Phoeeebs. You only really have two 'non-correct' answers with which to get information. And yes, your answer guesses potentially get you new letters, but not always.

I agree that it takes a bit of luck, but the chances of getting a lucky hit is multiplied by 8. Here's my closest one, where I had two or three chances to make it work and still failed.

Guess #1: STARE wrong
I lucked into a word with 4 greens, plus lots of hits around the board. This is the opener I've dreamed of!

Guess #2: STORE correct
Guess #3: OVERT correct
Knocked out two already, I'm on a roll.

Guess #4: PUKED wrong
I can't narrow anything down for certain, and I burn my last non-answer guess to eliminate letters. It pays off.

Guess #5: CREEP correct
Guess #6: GUPPY correct
Guess #7: BUTTE wrong
Shit! Hubris brings me down! I was positive the next one was BUTTE, but it was TULLE. Dammit. I'm out of the competition, but I'll finish it out with a clean sweep of the remaining answers...

Guess #9: FABLE correct
Guess #10: IMAGE correct
Guess #11 THREW correct

Repeated plays help. The answer set sees enough repetition that you start to learn. Specifically, this one had TULLE and COMMA which have both screwed me over in previous puzzles.

I think this is maybe the second time I have failed to get it and I think it's totally bogus because what the hell is this word? How was that a word? Maybe it appears in the dictionary ?? but I don't think we should have to dig into that level of slang. Grouse, grouse, grouse.

Those are the worst!!!!!! That setup is the destroyer of the octortal. You can do four or five guesses on some of these words. When I get to one of those I either switch words immediately or try to make a random word out of as many as possible of the remaining possible letters that could fit in those blanks. But sometimes it gets you at the end so you don't have this choice! Very frustrating. I haven't been doing the octortle all the time lately because I'm annoyed by some of their slang words or Britishisms that distort your effort. I don't want to have to choose between slang options and others and find out it was the slang word, three guesses deep. But eh.

I did not like this last word in the lower left - this is the one thing I do not like about the octordle, the frequency of this type of word in the answer.

Oh my god. I can finally stop playing Octordle! It's my white whale! I don't regularly play quordle (and I don't play wordle anymore)- but I've been playing Octordle every day to just beat it once. Just once. And today was the day. And I use a dangerous strategy. I use two words (PIOUS and TEARY) and then have to get the eight words right in each of the eight subsequent guesses. It finally worked today. I took some chances, particularly on the last one I guessed. But I did it. I did it! FUCK YOU OCTORDLE!

OMG Brilliant! I am so happy for you! It took me so long to get one in 10 and every time I do it's still feeling magical!

Octordle really screws with my purity of strategy when it comes to not making guesses I "know are wrong", because the only way to avoid one of those situations where there's six different words that all rhyme and vary by one letter is to slot in a completely different word you haven't used before, just to see what happens. So maybe I feel differently about the hard rules on this game even though I have been trying to obey them. Maybe this circumstance is just different enough that I should go with it.

I've been starting with "Slate" and then "Round" for octordle -- y'all have convinced me to up the vowels early. -- but I maintain hard rules for wordle and quordle

I am doing that because I feel like if I don't stick to hard rules I won't guess the first one in three. But then it feels like in some games you have really tilted the balance entirely to lucky guesses. I haven't done today's yet so when I do I will maybe experiment with that strategy? If things aren't going well in the first three, lol!
