Deathless
Re: Deathless
Hmm.
Re: Deathless
It's one of their best lines, so it could be rated as one of the best comedic lines in existence, and so it makes sense the AFI want to claim it. But it's utility is only... it's very funny.

Re: Deathless
It's rare for a film to have as many as three huge lines associated with it. Casablanca... probably the Godfather... and this?

Re: Deathless
Both of these last two are pretty good. What's the third from Jerry Maguire? "The human head weighs..."
Oh wait. Okay. I got all three. Duh.

Re: Deathless
Also, can we talk about how young Clint Eastwood might have been the singularly most handsome man ever created (if you're a cis-gendered white male)? Goddamn. Just look at him.

Re: Deathless
Yeah okay. We're getting into some quality quotes here, folks.
Re: Deathless
You know then you are in a work meeting and someone would find a serious issue with something, so a guy would say "uh, Houston, we have a problem" to break the tension?

Re: Deathless
I think Jerry Maguire has four quotes. None of them involve the size of the human head.
[EDIT: Nope, the "I'm just a boy standing in front of a girl" isn't from Jerry Maguire. It's three.]

Re: Deathless
So Groucho gets a whole setup and punchline but Osgood gets only a punchline -- nah. Great ending, maybe top 10 best last lines, but I'll accept the rejection.
Re: Deathless
Naw. I ain't on board for Groucho either. That's one where a guy tells a funny joke in a movie and then said funny joke is now one of the "greatest movie quotes of all time". Baloney.
Any time the solution is "banjo rifle", I'm in 100%.
Re: Deathless
Agreed. Its quotes. Not jokes. I'm going to make a t shirt. #QUOTESNOTJOKES

Re: Deathless
I still say it, even though I remember little from the movie and haven't seen it in 40 years.
Re: Deathless
I recognize the hypocrisy, but these feel qualitatively different to me. Groucho delivers the pajamas joke as a vaudevillian telling a joke and winking at his audience. The Shirley line is deadpan and part of the parody that is Airplane... dead serious delivery of the silliest lines ever.
But I also understand that maybe this is just reflective of changing styles of humor, and for people who were teens in 1930 seeing Animal Crackers for the first time, that pajamas line is today just as funny and iconic and emblematic of the movie it came from as the Shirley line is for me with Airplane. Maybe.
Naw. They're different, and I'm not a hypocrite. Debate ended.

Re: Deathless
I was more interested in the joke than a j'accuse moment but I agree, Groucho honed the jokes in vaudeville, they would often test them there before putting them in films. Would be similar if a TV character gets in if they got a movie. Like "Party on, Wayne" or something.
I listen to the Centuries of Sound podcast, and although it's often focused on music, it sometimes switches gears, like in a recent fascinating episode featuring audio reports during Pearl Harbor. I guess credit to AFI to be like, if it's in a movie, it counts as a movie. Movie is all movie, sound is all sound. But still, I'd have DQ'd "Here's Johnny."
Re: Deathless
Ahem. I believe "debate ended" was called. Your comments are out of order. Motion to demand withdrawal of previous statements by poorpete or face a censure vote. Do I hear a second?poorpete wrote: ↑Sat Feb 05, 2022 6:44 pmI was more interested in the joke than a j'accuse moment but I agree, Groucho honed the jokes in vaudeville, they would often test them there before putting them in films. Shirley! HEY SHIRLEY!
Could say this is a classic theater quote. Though Kazan does a good job framing it, maybe it feels different on stage.

Boooooo.
Re: Deathless
Yay. I have heard it in use, though maybe just in other tv shows and movies that are referencing this. Casablanca deserves its 3 or so quotes, it could've had many more.
Update: Woah, took a quick look. I guess if I had to narrow down the Casablanca quotes, this one might go. But it does elicit a feeling when i hear it, a bittersweet ennui.

Re: Deathless
I personally think a couple lines preceding that quote are more memorable, about the problems of two people not amounting to a hill of beans. But oh well.

No one says "we rob banks"
"plastics" has some cultural cache, but 1 - people say "one word, plastics" not just "plastics" what kind of friend just says "plastics'? And 2 - the guy we mock for saying "plastics" was right.

Re: Deathless
Not only does no one say these quotes but half the time they aren't even close to the most memorable line that made you do a double take.
And unless they're planning on having Casablanca populate a good 10% of the entire list with one film, I don't even think they've hit the two best ones from that movie yet?!
