Mike's Top 100 Songs of 2021 According to Spotify, #32

I have liked this song for a long time, but it hasn't aged well. The "love song" part of it feels very red-pill incel-esque to me anymore, so I had to remove it.

Still love Jonathan Coulton a lot though.

This one blew me away. First heard it earlier this year and played it enough to make it #31. Hamilton rocks.

Mike's Top 100 Songs of 2021 According to Spotify, #30

I like this one a lot. For a joke song, it never gets old for me. I just didn't think I listened to it that much this year. All I can think is that earlier in the year, I mentioned on the podcast that I'd found a really weird but cool cover of Crimson & Clover, and one of the members of Einsturdzende Neubauten was involved in the song. That prompted me to look up and listen to this song several times, which must have triggered the algorithm.

Maybe?

The few times we have gone to karaoke, I always tease my wife that I'm going to do this song, and she needs to get on stage with me and sing the girl part. It freaks her out to even think about performing this in public.

Love the song.

Merry Christmas happy holidays weeeeee

Searchers 9/10 - visual delight, been a while

I'm debating when I should watch all these again. I debate how much longer I can claim to have seen these films if I barely remember any scenes (though I clearly remember how I felt watching them, that mood memory is still clear). I think my daughter is almost to the age where we can start moving through some of the PG classics. Been itching for years to show her Casablanca.

This movie was one of the inspirations for some of the scenes in Mad Max: Fury Road, so go figure. The only problem with this movie is that the backdrop is the civil war and the hero is a confederate. But the movie isn't about the war. It does not celebrate the war in any way, nor do any of the issues fought in said war come up. So, take it with a grain of 1926 salt, and know that you could replace the two sides with red and blue from Halo and get the same movie.

The version I've seen most recently I believe played "Dixie" patriotically more than once, which I felt was pushing on the "yay Confederates!" button a little too much for my tastes. But I often substitute out soundtracks so maybe I should there too -- harsh I guess to penalize a silent film for audio :-)

City Lights 10/10 - One of my favorites of all time. Top 10 for sure. Chaplin is not overrated. Instead I feel the other silent film comedy auteurs are underrated.

I'm not super impressed by some of the titles of the top of their list. Gone with the wind is an objectively crap movie that should be about half as long as it is and about 100% less racist. But they are not wrong about Casablanca being great and you definitely should see it! This would be a great date night in movie!

It's more important that you see One flew over the cuckoo's nest immediately if not sooner, but I suppose you don't have to actually watch it on Christmas. It's not a very good date movie because although it might end with you comforting your date as both of you weep uncontrollably, it will not enhance the purposes of romance. All about Eve does enhance the purposes of romance, by contrast, and you also want to watch that.

Gone With the Wind 8/10 amazing spectacle, great soap opera, first POC oscar win is of great impoortance, but still a lot of regressive and backwards stuff noted elsewhere.

Singing in the Rain 10/10 Over the last two decades has jumped from great, to masterpiece, to one of my favorites ever. Endlessly watchable, might be my most watched film at this point. It's fricken Perfect.

Raging Bull 10/10 last time I saw it but it's been a while

Casablanca 10/10 another top 10 for me too. Another one improves on every view. The first time I saw it I was like "great but I don't get why people think it's a masterpiece" but it's like a great song, where repeat listens let the hooks hook.

Godfather 8/10 honestly haven't seen it in decades and should give it another chance.

Kane 10/10 when everything goes right, everything is great, and everything is pushing things forward, say the Sgt. Peppers of film. Inevitably overrated but what can ya do?
