Wow. I did NOT like Sophie's Choice. I know it's Meryl Streep and all, but I think the fact that this movie was so in the Zeitgeist, ruined it for me. I knew enough about it and had seen enough parodies that Streep's performance came off as overacted and cheesy to me. I get I'm in the minority, but it just didn't click with me.

Mike's Top 100 Songs of 2021 According to Spotify, #93

Speaking of cheesy, this one got me with the refrain:

I didn't know I was lonely til I saw your face.
I didn't know I was broken til I wanted to change.

I loved those lines the first time I heard them, and so I've kept this song around for quite a while. I find it uplifting and hopeful. It makes me feel good.

Yeah, it's the one drawback that really bothers me. I just watched Reservoir Dogs again about four months ago (still holds up). Several white characters use the n-word (maybe Tarantino himself, I can't remember), but it's jarring. And I get it- these characters are racists. But it's also glorifying these racists. It's also using it as a tool to make you laugh or gasp. That's cheap and unnecessary.

Particularly the use by Tarantino himself in films like Pulp Fiction- where it comes across as shock value. Which is particularly cheap and offensive.

On the other hand, I've recently watched Django Unchained (love it- Jamie Fox is so good), where the word is used profusely and it didn't bug me UNTIL Tarantino does it excessively in a bad Australian accent. I felt like that was such a transparent troll move that it took me out of the movie.

I haven't seed Django still, but with Once Upon a Time in Hollywood I'm glad I don't think there's a racial epithet in that film -- I could be very wrong. Maybe he's growing up.

Right, these characters are racists so they should speak like racists, but in his films, nearly everyone is COOOOL, and therefore it's kinda like those anti-smoking ads in the 90s that were purposely made to make kids want to smoke (or to at least make them feel it was an option to look into)

Swing Time is a 9/10, the missing 1 is for the scene where Fred Astaire gives a loving and technically amazing homage to his hero Bill "Bojangles" Robinson........ in blackface.

Watch Top Hat instead. Better dancing, better songs, funnier, and no blackface! One of the best films of all time.

Mia Zapata, lead singer of indie Seattle band The Gits, was murdered in 1993 at the age of 27. If you've watched any true crime series, you may have seen her... her story has been featured on a couple of them. I specifically saw it on an episode of Forensic Files and looked up The Gits. That's where I found that Joan Jett had done a tribute album with the remaining Gits called Evil Stig (Gits Live backwards). Now for the most part, I don't care for any of The Gits' music, but one track off of Evil Stig was Joan Jett reprising her cover of Crimson & Clover. That reminded me of how much I have always LOVED that song. I first remember hearing it in 1982, and 12 year old me was blown away by the idea of a woman (a supercool badass woman at that) singing a love song to another woman... in 1982... on mainstream radio. I've found other versions of the song I like, but none that I like as much as Joan Jett.

Someone told me there was a twist that would blow my mind, so I was looking for it and saw it during the first scene. Found it boring. I wish I could have just gone into it cold. I think it would have blown my mind.

Yeah I knew there was a twist and when "Some movies don't know they're The Sixth Sense" arrived I was like, oh there it is. It was kinda fun to see the pieces of it fall into place, but then I didn't feel the need to rewatch it like others.

I apologize for what you just watched. I don't know if anyone else will appreciate it as much as I do. My oldest son introduced me to this one, and all of my kids know it and they know all the lyrics, and we sing it together and it is a lot of fun. My wife is baffled.

Oh yeah, and earlier when I said that some of my songs were humorous but I wouldn't call them novelty songs... I was wrong. This is definitely a novelty song.

Just rediscovered this this year. It made me realize that I missed my emo/alternative calling in high school. Every band that the Dead Milkmen call out in Instant Club Hit (including the Smiths) was a band I would have loved in high school if I'd been exposed to them. Nowadays, I've explored them, and there's a few that I like, but it's too late for them to really speak to my soul. The moment passed.

I'm excited about this one. I like it a lot. It was my favorite song a few years ago when I first heard it, and it has stuck around. The guitar and the blues stylings have always reminded me of The Black Keys and other bluesy guitar duos who became popular around that time. Then I found out today that A) Hanni el Khatib is actually the guy's name, and B) Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys produced his sophomore album. Cool.

But wait, there's more... just for Pete... this song was originally written in 1929, and in 1931, Cab Calloway, Louis Armstrong, and Red Nichols all had hits with it. Sadly, the most popular version was a year later by The Mills Brothers, who were not white, but did sanitize it to more of a slow croon. Ew.

I like Hanni el Khatib's best, but here's my favorite "original" version...
