I found this a pretty dull song -- didn't include it in my tourney last month -- but never saw the subtitle...

Maori Farewell song?!

Māori words were added around 1915 and the tune was slightly changed. It became known as Po Atarau and was used as a farewell to Māori soldiers going to the First World War. After this, some white New Zealanders "mistakenly thought [the song was] an old Maori folksong

That explains it then. I was just about to post the following, and the forums notified me of two new posts:

Maori Farewell Song written by Maewa Kaihan. I don't know why I was expecting an actual Polynesian/Pacific Islander flavored tune when I clearly saw 1948 Bing Crosby stamped right on there. Unless maybe that mournful background crooning was supposed to capture the Maori spirit?

I get it!

"Manana!" Another song I'm obsessed with as:

- it's a good song! A solid earworm.
- it's lots of fun!
- it has a latin flavor -- love that percussion -- that it much appreciated in a mostly dull american pop music era.
- it's written by Peggy Lee!!! A famous singer, famous women singer no less, pens her own song and it becomes a massive hit! A few years later she writes "Bella Notte" for "Lady in the Tramp" -- give it up for her songwriting chops!
- she does a, uhhh, imitation Latin American accent, which, I know I'm guilty of this too and more recently but, uh doesn't hold up and might be a bit to very inappropriate.
- her song is about being dumb and lazy, which coupled with the accent above made many feel she was stereotyping -- she said it was the character not the ethnicity -- but you live by the fake accent you die by the fake accent

9/10 for the era, 6/10 with its baggage

A true ragtime throwback! Music from 30 years prior? Sounds about accurate to how nostalgia still functions. Meanwhile Silk Sonic is taking cues from 50 years prior, so they are more out-of-date than this is.

Grew up with this album and have every note of it 168 ways by heart, but no doubt it is racist the way they fake the accent and act like she's an idiot. If it was sung by somebody not from North Dakota who made it clear they were putting on a character sort of Carol Burnett style, it could be retrieved, but then we fall into the hole sexist thing, phone I see that you refused to put the w on that word, I'll have a word with you later. A very large number of her songs are sexist in a way that reflects the arrow too, so what do we do with that? The era not the arrow. btw, if Tahl continues backwards we'll be reaching unknown territory for me. My 1947 tourney starts in January and I'm only starting my month-long solo listening party this week.

I just checked the map, and across the alley from the Alamo is a Ripley's Believe It or Not museum, plus Ripley's Haunted Adventure, Tussaud's Waxworks, AND... The Alamo Plaza T-shirt Shop.

And that's just on the west side.

I was amazed on my first trip there to find out that the Alamo is just smack in the middle of San Antonio.

It is difficult to say how the idea came to me beyond the fact that it suddenly occurred to me that to have my dog listening to the phonograph, with an intelligent and rather puzzled expression, and call it 'His Master's Voice' would make an excellent subject. We had a phonograph and I often noticed how puzzled he was to make out where the voice came from. It certainly was the happiest thought I ever had.

Didn't top the country charts but this is the year of Hank's breakthrough, which might be his most R&B-inspired song too...

The earliest year available on Wikipedia for Billboard year-end top singles is 1946. So there are 13 (now 12 after the below) songs left for 1947, then the top 25 for 1946. Then a special finale especially for Kyle.
