Power Griddle

Post by Phoebe »

This may sound paranoid and probably should not be indulged in that sense, but I'm concerned after doing some reading about the whole Russian strategy for winter. Apparently they have no compunctions about letting people freeze to death be it in Ukraine or anywhere else, and now Putin is getting even more specific with the rhetoric about how they need to attack the countries who are funding and supporting Ukraine. I have a fireplace but I'm also a real fan of electricity and plumbing and stuff like that. I feel like we couldn't even handle wearing masks at a grocery store, as a society, and people will go completely nuts if we have any significant disruption of our infrastructure.
How likely do we amateur analysts think this might be?
How much water should I be putting in my basement and is it better to keep it in the basement? I have heard that, you know, the radioactivity of bad weaponry travels parallel to the Earth and does not affect things stored in the basement.
It feels gross to have these questions when people in Ukraine are sitting here right now without power, trying not to freeze to death or starve to death, and I'm casually pondering how unpleasant I would find their situation for half a day.

Example of the kind of thing that concerns me. Why did they have a power outage, anyway? This is exactly the kind of facility for which we train cybersecurity specialists. It's hard not to wonder if there's a reason for that and what would happen if we faced a truly coordinated attack instead of the constant chipping on a daily basis. I don't know how to make sense of the number of regular attacks faced by any reasonably large business or institution, because I don't have the proper context or technical knowledge. How many are just low level chatter and how many are serious? Many businesses and health systems in my area have been successfully attacked and/or had to deal with ransomware, and apparently those are just criminals and not state-level actors.

I'm a little concerned that your concerns are on the conspiracy-side of things. Couple this with your recent observations on Boebert's parentage and I have to sincerely ask: Hey. You okay? Can I help you with anything? Because while I understand your concerns about Houston having a power outage that affected their water- this happens over the country on a regular basis.

But more importantly, I'm worried that your concern about doomsday prepping is misplaced. While I think you are extremely capable of preparing for the end for yourself and/or your kids, we need to talk about the elephant in the room. I know your husband. I know that if the grid goes down and the collapse of society is imminent, he will stomp his feel and pout until the world bends to his will and returns to normalcy. In essence, you're doomed. He's doomed you and there's nothing you can do about it. But don't feel bad, I'm doomed too-- what with the 433 kids I have. What you should do is just live in denial of the coming apocalypse and then-- if it happens-- drink heavily.

I have all the liquor ready!

Glenn Beck says I need to start reading the news with spiritual eyes, because politics is no longer about R and D and laws and policies, but is about the fact that the left literally wants to feed our children to Moloch as a sacrifice - this is what's behind the creeping rise of pedophilia and grooming. I am quoting except I left out the bonus parts about Baal. I don't know if this is Glenn telling us that he has abandoned capitalism or if he thinks we feed the children to Moloch in some new way now.

I should also make clear, I am not a follower of Glenn Beck. I'm not being serious - one hopes that this goes without saying but it probably does not always. I think Glenn is pretty serious about Moloch though.

Oh man, I missed the chance to share my really outlandish thoughts about the world Cup when I was in the thick of the feelings, but I could really give you some good conspiracy theories about the world Cup. They are so damn corrupt.
I think one of the reasons Americans can't quite get with soccer even now is that we are accustomed to sports where everything is measured with great precision and there is a lot of clarity about what is supposed to be happening even if the specifics of a particular call or incident are disputed. Like we might fight about whether a guy had his knee down before losing possession of the football, or whether a certain number of seconds should have been put back on the clock, but there are strict rules about how to judge and apply those things.
It can be difficult to tell whether someone intended to hit a certain receiver or whether his forward motion with the throwing arm had stopped.
But in the world Cup you will have the entire game riding on some complete Insanity of vagueness that makes no sense and is completely open to dispute, or worse yet you'll have a machine making a call that gives the veneer of machine-like precision and yet is anything but precise or just or rational according to the rules!
You'll have time randomly added on to the end of the game in which entire goals are scored that shouldn't have been possible!
And of course... Ask me how I feel about the people who are managing the VAR system. That's where the conspiracies will begin but that's far from where they end!
It's an interesting thought process because it allows me to see where my actually entrenched biases are located.

Media not helpful on this, now reporting on attempted attacks on power stations in the Pacific Northwest and all kinds of other problems. Why you do this? I don't even have time to go to the store to pick up milk and cereal and apples much less stock up on life giving water and protein bars. Ugh.

They're reviewing grid security now, everywhere. When it gets cold or very hot, we have much of Midwest and California vulnerable to shutdowns anyway, and Texas has its own problem. I want a backup generator for Christmas, sheesh.
That's the current MO in Ukraine as well: assault on power grid.
We just decided to openly give them missile defense systems so I imagine that's for reasons.
I can't discuss it, have migraine, agh.
