Safety Razor

Post by Kyle »

I tried to find the thread where we've talked about this before, but couldn't. But this always amazes me.

In August of 2019, I paid $12.66 for a basic safety razor (now selling for $15.66- thanks, Obama). It looks like this:

I also paid $7.29 for 200 razor blades (now selling for $8.54- Bidenomics, amiright?).

So I've paid a total of $19.95 over five years ago. And I still have about twenty or so razors left.

Two things that strike me: (1) I've saved a butt-ton of money over the last five years- even if I was buying cheap, disposable razors that only last a week, I'd be in for a lot more money; and (2) this has to be FAR superior for the environment, right? My waste can be fit in a ring box. Think of all the disposable razors, or "mega hawk five blades" that would fill up the trash over five years.

How do you safely dispose of your used blades?

I put the used ones back in the paper wrapper that the new one came from and put it in the trash. I should probably keep an empty, clean coke can in there to put them into. Maybe I’ll start doing that. And when it fills up after a couple of years I’ll throw it away.

Any thoughts on how that razor would work for shaving one's head?

I've heard that it takes some getting used to on the curves of your jaw- and I'm guessing that's true for the scalp. But I found it really easy from the get go. But for a $20 experiment, I'd guess it's worth trying.

I like this plan. In our house the blades just go on into the trash. I use disposables because they last SO long for my slight purposes - much less duress for them. We discussed it here in the car while waiting for something and decided the rank ordering of quantity from low to high is:
Butt-load.
Shitload
Shit-ton (not sure how many buttloads one s-load or s-ton represents but it's some multiple)
Fuckload
Fuckton
(F is higher than S and ton higher than load.)
So by this logic I'd put a butt ton between a butt-load and shit-load.
I wonder if we are missing other key standards.

I've seen pictures where old houses used to have a slot in the wall where you could dispose of your used, dull razor blades, but there wasn't actually a container for them, they would just fall into the gap between the plaster/sheet rock of the wall. Makes remodeling old houses a bit hazardous.
