If the thread goes 10 hours without replies, then it officially dies, and the last person to post before that time wins.

Bah! The Unkillable Precious was 9 hours and 18 minutes, and it lasted over a month. The Incredible Shrinking Thread managed to stay alive 11 days as it shrank from 10 hours to just one. 8 hours was obviously too short, but I debated between 10 and 11 for this one. I'm just getting a feel for how they play out. 12 seems to be a good place.

All She Wants to do is Rock, Wynonie Harris
I found this a while back after hearing a podcast on the history of early rock and rock and a quest for the "first" rock and roll songs. This one has been my most enduring favorite of them, and it makes very clear what the words rock and roll originally meant. From that first primal scream to open the song all the way to where she wants to "hucklebuck" all night long, I can only imagine that Wynonie Harris brought the friggin house down with this song.

After I posted this, I googled its origin to make sure it wasn't based in something inappropriate or racist. It turns out it came about in the early 20th century when evolution was being debated. Evolution deniers used it as a statement of sarcastic shock: "Well I'll be a monkey's uncle, Bart! Did you hear what that city-slicker just said?"

Good on you for looking it up to make sure it didn't have a racist origin. I still don't think I'll go around using that in casual conversation, just to avoid any possible misunderstandings.

Sabotage, Beastie Boys
Sabotage? What's that doing here? God's, I love this song. It was my ringtone for a couple years. It was the opening theme to my podcast for years. Sabotage is a classic. Punk-rap with lots of screamed lyrics... and that amazing intro... plus the video is an absolute HOOT. It's a banger, yeh? Of course it is!

Killer, Eminem
I like almost everything Eminem does. I can't help myself. I actually started off with this song listening to the remix with Jack Harlow and Cordae, not realizing it wasn't the original. And I liked THAT version, even with Jack Harlow. Then I discovered the original, and it is so much better.

Rockstar Sea Shanty, Nickelback
I think we've already established that everyone loves sea shanties since the pandemic, right? Well, this is a good one. And it has the added bonus of Nickelback getting in on the joke. Just fun nonsense.

Over Easy, Elle King
Damn, son! Great song. Great! Elle King is a damn treasure, and the only thing that redeems Rob Schneider. Over Easy is gritty and dirty and sexy, and King performs it perfectly. My wife discovered this and played it for me a while back. It became an instant fave on first listen.

Handsome, The Vaccines
This one's a bit of an overachiever. I love love love their song Wetsuit, and when I started looking at their other music earlier this year, Handsome caught my attention. It's good and I bopped to it for a while, but I've gotten my use out of it and now it's back to the once-in-a-while playlists. It's no Wetsuit.

Mike's Top 100 Songs of 2022 According to Spotify, #28

Queen Bitch, Lil Kim
Another one that I discovered through my Spotify playlist of old school lady rappers. I knew who Lil Kim was at the time, but I don't think I ever heard one of her songs before this year... No wait, I just looked and there's another one of hers coming up that I was partially familiar with. Either way, Queen Bitch is right up there. It's gangster, and it has that smooth overconfident boss tone that I associate with something like Damn It Feels Good to be a Gangsta.

Good song.

Fear of the Dawn, Jack White
We saw Jack White in concert a few months ago. As I always do, I check the setlists for the current tour and see what songs are being performed at most shows (the site setlist.fm has and compiles all this info). I put those songs into a playlist and familiarize myself with them before the show. Fear of the Dawn was a new one I did not know. Apparently I played it a lot. It's not even in my top ten of favorite Jack White/White Stripes songs, but it's still really good

Mike's Top 100 Songs of 2022 According to Spotify, #26

Shama Lama Ding Dong, Band of Oz
Obviously, my first exposure to this song was from Animal House when the guys pull into Dexter Lake Road clubhouse because they see that Otis Day and the Knights are performing. Band of Oz's Shama Lama Ding Dong is a major feature of this scene. Having rediscovered this song recently, let me try to explain how much I love it. It comes up in my playlists constantly, and I love it every single time. I sing along every time. The song is beautiful. The harmonies are wonderful. I love the fact that never once does anyone say "Shama Lama Ding Dong" in the song Shama Lama Ding Dong. It's a joy.

My fever hasn't broken, but its much weaker and the steroid they gave me reduced the swelling and pain in my throat. Add the Vicodin which has broken my cough... and I'm feeling damn fine right now.
