I just did this with my old D&D group on Zoom and they were mesmerized (they're also 13). It's not complicated and you can easily google it to figure it out. But please don't do that and play along. Also, if you know how it works, please don't spoil it- just play along. As many people as want to can participate. Here's the rules:

1. Pick a number between 1 and 30. If you want, post it up using the {color=#f8f8f8}{/color} tag so it's invisible (but use real brackets "[]" instead of "{}"). I promise not to look at it. If you don't want to trust me, then you can pm me your number and then post here saying you've done that- you will know I haven't looked at it because it will remain in your "outbox" until I do read it, and if I read it it would be in your "sent messages" folder. Either way- it doesn't matter if other people know what your number is, it's just important that I don't.

2. I'm including this chart in the top post, because we will be using it extensively later:

Okay. So for everyone playing- look at the yellow card and tell me if your number is on it. Just say yes or no.

No

Yes

Okay, now look at the blue and purple cards and tell me which one your card is on (or both or none).

both

Neither.

Okay, still with the Blue and Purple cards, look at them and tell me if the number 2 higher than your number is on the cards (if your number is 29- look for 1; if your number is 30- look for 2)- and again tell me which ones, both or none.

Okay, now Green and Red(ish)- tell me which one your number appears on, or both, or neither.

Okay- last step. Find any card that has your number on it. Tell me a number between 1 and 30 that is not on that card. But don't tell me the color of the card.

(also- anyone that fell behind can still answer all the questions and play along.)

Do we also have to tell you which card that is? Or only the number that is not on that card?

Clarification -- when you say "which one your card is on" -- what exactly did you mean by that? Number?

The secret's not tough: [SPOILERS IN WHITE TEXT] You add up the numbers in the upper left corner for each card they say their number is on. The sum is their number. Flame picked 4- which is in the top left corner of a card, that's why his number only appeared on one color of card. The other questions (the "your number plus two" question and "a number on a card your number's not on") were just head-fakes.

The truth is that I didn't really care about the magic trick. I just wanted to have people go through all these elaborate steps just so I could tell them I pooped their pants. AND IT WORKED! I laughed so hard as I was posting that up. But I also realized that if there wasn't an actual magic trick, then I was just pulling a cruel prank, and I don't want to be that guy. So I went out and found a cool little trick. Thanks for playing along, y'all!

Time for me to make you poop your pants. If a cheeky guy decided to claim that his number is on all cards, you can slap him so hard and laugh in his face, because it's not possible.

Which reminds me of another Oates-related phenomenon in my house, but I'll add that to the Oates thread.
