Mike's Top 100 Songs of 2022 According to Spotify, #70

Chaise Longue, Wet Leg
This song is just too cool. Again, just a very absurdist post-post-punk aesthetic. They hooked me with the suggestive lyrics and detached delivery, but then the line "Would you like us to assign someone to worry your mother?" was just too good. It's not a song I ever seek out, but it's in the mixed, and it's always a pleasant surprise when it comes up.

"Hey! McKinley and Ben! This is for you. ... It's a chaise lounge. We didn't know if maybe you guys already had one. We have the receipt if you do." --Wet Hot American Summer

Mike's Top 100 Songs of 2022 According to Spotify, #69

Freeze Frame, J. Geils Band
You would think this was on the perennial favorite list, but it was not (at the time). I heard Freeze Frame somewhere early this year and it made me remember A. how much I like this song, and B. that I somehow hadn't tagged it on Spotify yet. So I did.

Mike's Top 100 Songs of 2022 According to Spotify, #68

S.O.S. (Sawed Off Shotgun), The Glorious Sons
For a bunch of Canadians, The Glorious Sons have captured the blue collar twang of American southern rock pretty well. Just another song that I really really enjoyed this year. Another song that is good for singing at top volume when you're driving.

"Alright, you primitive screwheads, listen up. See this? This... is my BOOMSTICK! It's a twelve-gauge, double-barreled Remington. S-Mart's top of the line. You can find this in the sporting goods department. That's right, this sweet baby was made in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Retails for about $109.95. It's got a walnut stock, cobalt blue steel, and a hair trigger. That's right. Shop smart. Shop S-Mart. YOU GOT THAT?" --Ash, Army of Darkness

Dear Winter 2.0, AJR
I am almost certain this song was on my chart last year as well, but I didn't type out song names that time, so searching for it would be tedious. It's sweet and wistful and very much has teenage dirtbag vibes in the attitude. I was extremely enamored of this song in 2021, and it has still seen regular play this year, but it's fading a little.

Sanka Coffie: You mean winter, as in ICE?
Derice Bannock: Maybe.
Sanka Coffie: You mean winter, as in igloos and Eskimos and penguins and ICE?
Derice Bannock: Possibly.
Sanka Coffie: See ya.

Halloween Blues, The Fratellis
I introduced my oldest son to the Fratellis song Chelsea Dagger many many years ago, and he returned the favor this time by asking me if I'd ever heard Halloween Blues. Awesome song. A little rockabilly with that driving guitar. Plus I can't hear it without thinking of Jacob for bringing it to me. Good stuff!

Mike's Top 100 Songs of 2022 According to Spotify, #64

Common People, William Shatner
Creeping up four slots from last year's #68, I still love this song. Here's last year's commentary, which still holds.
Hands down one of the greatest covers of all time. Go listen to the original version, and it's really weak. The guy wrote a great song but put zero fire into the performance, as if he's too emo and disaffected to feel the anger of his own lyrics. But Shatner kills it. I'm not a fan of his spoken word songs, but I'm a fan of this one.

Mike's Top 100 Songs of 2022 According to Spotify, #63

Hit 'em Up Style, Carolina Chocolate Drops
I dig just about anything from the Carolina Chocolate Drops. I first discovered them through their absolutely haunting rendition of Little Margaret, which ultimately brought me this cover of Hit em Up Style. Along with Shatner's Common People (in my last post), this one is among the best of the best of cover songs. A cool and distincting unique take on the original, AND a good song in its own right, regardless of whether or not you know the original.

If you like their style, their album Genuine Negro Jig is absolutely solid and makes a good intro to their work.

Today apparently. Congrats Eliahad!

I saw this 20 minutes ago, but then we had emergency vehicles show up for our neighbor, and I got distracted. Can't believe I missed it by a minute.
