Bye Bye Love, Tampa
Last Christmas break, Lisa and I watched the movie Spontaneous, about a high school where students start exploding for no discernable reason. I liked it and I didn't (Find my review here.) Regardless of my enjoyment of the movie, they played this song (a cover, obviously), and it was just so haunting that I had to have it. Still enjoy it.
"Okay, bye-bye now. Bye-bye. Bye." --Stewardess Barbie, Toy Story 2

Long Hot Summer Day, Turnpike Troubadours
Old song, new cover. Another one from my wife's list. My first thought was that it's awfully repetitive: 4 verses and 6 choruses, and every last one of them ends with the title of the song. But it's catchy. It gets inside you. It's a great driving song... I can't help singing the whole thing all the way through. It just makes me happy.
“Well, gentlemen, the way I see it, if this hot weather continues, it’s going to melt the polar caps and the whole wide world, and all those parts that ain’t already water will surely be flattened.” --ML, Do the Right Thing

Bobcat on the Banjo, Kyle Tuttle
Um... I was listening to some bluegrass and banjo music and I hit like on this one. I don't remember listening to it enough to make the chart, but... here it is.

oops!, Yung Gravy
See? Not only has Yung Gravy been with your girl, but now also your mom. Yeah I know, he's smarmy, but it's so over the top and mixed with just enough self-deprecating references to having a small penis and such, that I just find him entertaining. It won't age well, and I know a few years down the line, I'll be even more embarrassed about listening to his music than I am now, but that's a problem for Future Mike.
Captain Steven Hiller: Oops.
David Levinson: What do you mean, oops?
Captain Steven Hiller: Some jerk put this...
David Levinson: Don't say "oops" ...
Captain Steven Hiller: What do you say we try that again?
David Levinson: Yes, yes. Yes. Without the "oops." Thataway.

Staying Alive, Tropical Fuck Storm
Great cover from an Australian post-punk rock group. Never heard of them before this and haven't listened to anything else they've done, but I should. I dig this sound, and I dig her voice. I love this.

No Children, The Mountain Goats
If you listen to only one song off my self-indulgent yearly top 100, make it this one. I thought it a joke song at first. I was listening at work, and the lyrics were so dark I had to save it for later. On my second listen, I realized there was no joke here. It's one of the darkest, most powerful songs I've heard. I've listened dozens of times since, and I can't get enough. If I weren't letting Spotify design this list, this would have been my #1 song of the year.
There's a longish story about how I came to this song, but it involves two other songs higher up on the list. I'll let the tale unfold has I get to them.
"My idea of a perfect school is one in which there are no children... at all." --Agatha Trunchbull, Matilda

Tom's Diner, AnnenMay Kantereit & Giant Rooks
This one just pisses me off. I heard this one on Tik Tok. Not the opening music, but just the first few lines until that guy with the gravelly voice kicks in. Super cool. I found it on Spotify and then hit Like, but after the first couple listens, I realized that other than that 30 seconds, the rest of the song bores me to tears. I like the original better. So I took it out of rotation, and yet here it is on my top 100, and higher up than songs I like much better.
Stupid Spotify.

Lord Forgive Me, Tobe Nwigwe
Hmm. I found Tobe Nwigwe through his song Round Here. "Round here, if it smells funny, onions getting peeled!" Great song. That led me to Fye Fye, which is my favorite of his. Neither of those are on this list, and instead I get Lord Forgive Me. Which is not my favorite. What I like about Nwigwe's music is the power and passion behind his rapping. He's practically shouting most of his lyrics, and the energy gets me.
"Dear Lord, forgive me for what I am about to, ah, say in this magnificent place of worship... Bugger! Bugger! Bugger, bugger, bugger, bugger!" --Charles, Four Weddings and a Funeral

Kung Fu is My Fighting Style, Dan Reeder
March 1, 2008, my wife took me to the Slowdown in Omaha to watch They Might be Giants as a birthday gift. It was incredible. First time I saw them live. We were early so as to get good seats, and while we were chilling with some drinks, we got to enjoy the Slowdown's exceptional playlist. We wrote down several of the songs to look up later. Among the were New York Groove by Ace Frehley, and a song whose only lyrics were "I got all the fuckin work I need," which turned out to be Dan Reeder's Work Song.
All of that is to say that once in a while, Spotify throws me a new Dan Reeder song, and I think this one is funny. It's earned it's place here. There's better from Dan Reeder coming up, but I generally like most of his songs.

Tainted Love, Soft Cell
Perennial favorite, yeah? Not much more to say. It's an absolute classic from my youth. And check out that video! There is SO much going on... and how did they manage to do a video for Tainted Love that DOESN'T visually hit those icon beats? Such a wasted opportunity.

Percolator, Charly Bliss
One of the very few songs I've ever gotten from a YouTube recommendation. I love this song. I like some of their other stuff as well, but for me, Percolator is peak Charly Bliss. I'm a sucker for the whole pop-punk/power-pop thing happening here. The lead singer's voice varies between squeaky and screaming through the whole thing, and it just works. It's the frenetic energy.
Interestingly, I've always heard this song as being a sort of edgy version of the manic pixie dream girl, but I recently read an interview where the lead singer says it is autobiographical and is a mashup of all the over-the-top aspects of herself, both good and bad. As she puts it, she's always either 0 or 100 about everything with no middle ground.
