Mike's Top 100 Songs of 2022 According to Spotify, #97

B.O.B. (Bombs Over Baghdad), Outkast

My wife bought this album ages ago... on CD no less. I liked the whole album, but I think it sorta got lost as we transitioned to mp3s and then to streaming. Early this year, it featured as background music to some video I saw on YouTube or Tik Tok and I was kicking myself for not listening to this for the last 20 years. This song is an absolute banger! The music is genius, and the frenetic energy of it grabs me every time. I mentioned my focus-less music period of thia year, and this was one of the songs that pulled me out of it and got me into a rap/hip-hop phase (old and new) that lasted the rest of the year.

Richard Roth: Hi. Richard Roth. Don't call me 'Dick'.
Robert Wiener: Robert Wiener. Don't call ME 'Dick', either.
--Live from Baghdad

Mike's Top 100 Songs of 2022 According to Spotify, #96

Zen (with K.Flay and grandson), X-Ambassadors

My top song of 2021 according to Spotify and still on the charts. I love almost anything from K.Flay or grandson, so to have them together is a delight. And K.Flay performed nearby here recently. Coulda seen her for $25 a head, but we had something else already going on. So sad for me.

'A boy is given a horse on his 14th birthday. Everyone in the village says, "Oh how wonderful." But a Zen master who lives in the village says, "We'll see." 'The boy falls off the horse and breaks his foot. Everyone in the village says, "Oh how awful." The Zen master says, "We'll see." The village is thrown into war and all the young men have to go to war. But, because of the broken foot, the boy stays behind. Everyone says, "Oh, how wonderful." The Zen master says, "We'll see."' --Gust Avrakotos, Charlie Wilson's War

Mike's Top 100 Songs of 2022 According to Spotify, #95

The Losers Club, Durry

Durry is a brother/sister duo who started making music because they were trapped in a house together during the pandemic. I saw them sharing their music and trying to stir up support for their first album when they released their song Who's Laughing Now. It's a damn fine song, and I'm a sucker for an indie production like that, so I've had them on my playlists ever since. Losers Club is one that calls to me. I really like it.

Mike's Top 100 Songs of 2022 According to Spotify, #94

Psycho Killer, Talking Heads
This came out of playing my perennial favorites list for a month or so. This is classic Talking Heads, and it is awesome. I have been listening to this song so long, I can't remember how I first heard it. And even with it being overplayed as a too-on-the-nose song in movies and TV shows with lazy writers, I haven't tired of it yet.

Hans : An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind, I believe that wholeheartedly.
Billy : No it doesn't. There'll be one guy left with one eye. How's the last blind guy gonna take out the eye of the last guy left who's still got one eye! All that guy has to do is run away and hide behind a bush. Gandhi was wrong, it's just that nobody's got the balls to come right out and say it.

Mike's Top 100 Songs of 2022 According to Spotify, #93

Death Cup, Mom Jeans
Okay. I don't get it, but it's here. I heard it on my discovery playlist on Spotify and thought it was interesting. I hit like and put it in rotation. It took a while, but eventually I decided it did nothing for me. I unliked it and took it out. But apparently it lingered there long enough to make the chart. I mean... it's okay. I think I'm gonna hit like again but then not put it on a playlist. It'll be one that is kinda cool to hear every 8-10 months.

Mike's Top 100 Songs of 2022 According to Spotify, #92

Gin & Juice, The Gourds
I love this song. Love it. I love the original as well, but a good bluegrass cover of an awesome rap song...? Fuggetaboutit! I love bluegrass covers. I started with bluegrass cover songs when Yancey brought in a couple of Hayseed Dixie albums years ago, and finding the Gourds was just a matter of time after that. I can listen to this anytime.

Mike's Top 100 Songs of 2022 According to Spotify, #91

That was a Crazy Game of Poker, O.A.R.
I don't know, this song just called to me. It was something off my wife's playlist in the last year or two, and so I went with it. And if it were under four minutes long, I'd still have it in regular rotation. But at nearly nine minutes long, every time I hear it it, I'm tired of it by the six minute mark. Ugh.

Mike's Top 100 Songs of 2022 According to Spotify, #90

Choctaw Bingo, James McMurty
This one was #67 last year, and here's what I said then:
I listened to Choctaw Bingo a bunch a handful of years ago. Just this year I remembered that it existed, so I put it on and was pleased to find I still knew all the words. It's comforting.
Still mostly true. It's long and kinda monotonous, so I found myself skipping it more often in 2022, but it still ranks.

Mike's Top 100 Songs of 2022 According to Spotify, #89

Violet, Connor Price
I haven't reviewed the whole list, but I'm pretty certain this one is the newest (to me) song in my top 100. I found this maybe two months ago on Tik Tok and it hooked me. It's a knock off of the song Billie Eilish by Armani White, but it's really more of an improvement, because it's actually listenable. It's another example of Gen Z white boy rap, but I enjoy it.

Poor People's Store, Shinyribs
It's kinda silly, kinda folksy. It clocks in at just two and a half minutes, and I can only assume that Spotify put it on my Discovery list because of my affinity for Dan Reeder. Well played, Spotify. Well played.

Mike's Top 100 Songs of 2022 According to Spotify, #87

The Muck, K.Flay
Spotify says K.Flay was my most listened to artist of the year, and definitely offers me every new release she has. I like this one. Not my favorite by any stretch, but good. A perfectly acceptable K.Flay offering. I know that sounds boring, but we're still low on the ranking, so the most interesting stuff is still to come. I hope.

Walter Sobchak: Those rich fucks! This whole fucking thing... I did not watch my buddies die face down in the muck so that this fucking strumpet...
The Dude: I don't see any connection to Vietnam, Walter.
Walter Sobchak: Well, there isn't a literal connection, Dude.
The Dude: Walter, face it, there isn't any connection.
