Deathless
Re: Deathless
Hmmmm. I'm interested to see what beats this. This kind of seems like a No. 1 to me.

Re: Deathless
Wizard of Oz defines movies. It's what we'd give aliens if they asked what a movie is. Everything is either perfect or wonderfully imperfect. It's magical, just a dozen years into the sound era, it's got great songs, visual effects, costumes, sets, makeup, and performances. It's has striking black and white photography and striking color photography.
And it's not only merely quotable but it's really most sincerely quotable.

If it was #1 I'd have no complaints.
Re: Deathless
I couldn't have said it better, pete. Very eloquent and right on the money. Thanks for that.
While the Bond quote is definitely list-worthy, I wonder-- just because the limitations of its quotability-- if it deserves a spot this high up.

That's actually a pretty good line.

Re: Deathless
Good quote.
Re: Deathless
Good one but probably has zero cultural cache, and only have heard movie buffs quote it, if at all. I'd be surprised if this was in the top 50 in a 2022 list.

"Rosebud.", Charles Foster Kane (Orson Welles), Citizen Kane
"Rosebud.", Charles Foster Kane (Orson Welles), Citizen Kane
Re: Deathless
No arguments on this one. Everyone knows that Rosebud was his sled. Everyone knows it is a classic last words quote. Everyone knows what movie it's from. It has become emblematic of giving away spoilers that everyone should know already. And all that after more than 80 years.
Any time the solution is "banjo rifle", I'm in 100%.

Right? We're getting Futurama revival #4 but still nothing for Jay. It stinks.

Re: Deathless
I mean referenced in Lion King, proceeded by another movie quote that we haven't got yet.
Excellent quote, in context, I've never quoted it to friends or anything, how could I, how could I match the pathos? Sidney is a top 5 film actor, but he doesn't need a catchphrase, he's the sum of all his lines. Meryl is also a top 5 great, but doesn't need a high-ranking quote to prove it. The others: Denzel, Cary Grant, Katherine Hepburn, are any here? Either way, they don't need to.

This is losing its cultural relevance- still a great quote, but not timeless like the Wizard of Oz.

Watched this last weekend. Great movie. Great quote. And the quote is equally loved because people now use the quote to define movies. Movies, the stuff that dreams are made of.

Re: Deathless
Yep finally we have a few more that make sense as movie quotes to me.
This one inspired me to investigate further and I found the following surprising piece of new-to-me information in an article printed in the Boston globe:
"...Project X-Ray....The US spent about $24 million, in current dollars, on this plan to arm millions of American bats with tiny napalm time bombs and transport them to Japan in giant, ventilated bomb shells that would be cooled to keep them in hibernation. The shells would then be released, pop open, and the bats would revive from contact with the warm air, flying away and sheltering in houses or buildings where they would then detonate 15 to 30 minutes later. They did lots of testing and had several airplanes requisitioned for the project, but unfortunately the only thing they managed to destroy was a brand new US Army Air Force base in New Mexico."

Re: Deathless
Great quote, often misquoted, often misattributed. The best thing about it is that she knows her friends are going to dismiss her as an emotional crazypants when in fact only she and her personal assistant see the truth of the situation: her employers are conspiring to put her out to pasture, a brazen hussy aims to steal her man, job, and life, and her bestie is too soft hearted to realize it and will blame her for being mean. So be it! Time to get raging drunk and cause some scenes while raining truths down like an air raid. This movie has a lot of other good quotes but these list makers have no idea. Marilyn Monroe appears in this film, early in her career, and has some zingers. Makes clear her whole dumb blonde thing is an act and she's in on the joke.
Anyway, my favorite one is:
"You want an answer or an argument?"
"An answer."
"No."
"Why not?"
"Now you want an argument."
