Re: Deathless
Yes, okay. Let's take something an actual human said in the real prime material plane and ascribe it to a movie actor in a movie.
Re: Deathless
Yeah- I agree. This is like having one of the quotes be from Romeo and Juliet. That's dumb. It might be a famous quote. But it's not famous for the movie.

That's not even from the movie that actually said that line! That line is from The Fugitive!

No, I actually agree with poorpete on this one. Obviously, Jim Carrey should dominate the list from here on out.
Any time the solution is "banjo rifle", I'm in 100%.
Re: Deathless
But I accept Schwarzenegger. It's a testament to the quote's power that everyone still quotes it in his voice.

Re: Deathless
This has always enraged me. Not only is it uttered in this absurd accent, but you know damn well what you're going to get: some kind of chocolate.
Also I hate the whole movie. Hate it. I can't say honestly out loud what I think is wrong with it. Ye olde freedom of speech is going by the wayside day by day over here.

Re: Deathless
In the book version, Forrest fucks an orangutan. The book is pure National Lampoon style farce without the emotional Oscar-bait added to the movie. If you think that makes the book better, you're surprisingly wrong.Phoebe wrote: ↑Mon Feb 07, 2022 4:14 pmThis has always enraged me. Re: Deathless
My objection is that its the "Magic Autistic Man." I'm sick of this trope and how it minimizes what autism is. And while we're here: Fuck you, The Good Doctor.
Re: Deathless
Then in that case, the book is definitely better. He's not so much autistic in the book as he is a general Phillip J Fry style hapless idiot (but slightly meaner).

The list is getting better. This one still has some heft, but I'm sure it's already vanishingly obscure for Millennials and Gen Z.

Wow, so they really are going with the 10% Casablanca approach, and have finally gotten to one of the significant Quotables. I like this one the most but imagine they still have at least one or two more from Casablanca unless I missed it earlier in the thread.

Re: Deathless
Gonna give high praise to this one, as I knew it even before seeing the film, it being referenced so much. If people are asked to imitate Garbo, and it's rare now, but if they do, they'd give this quote. And two decades after seeing the film, it's all I remember. And also, it works outside the context of the film, who hasn't felt this way?

Re: Deathless
Yup. Checks out. Still waiting for the third.
Re: Deathless
My kids don't know "Show me the money." And I don't feel like it's some egregious gap in their cultural education. Jerry Maguire just isn't that must-see kind of "oh my god you've NEVER seen Jerry Maguire" experience. It's super quotable for people who've seen it--great big meme factory of the late 90's. But I think "you had me at hello" is the only one with real staying power, and even then, like a lot of old ones on this list, kids will know it and know it's a famous movie quote but not have any idea where it came from.
I'm not saying they were wrong to put it on the list, because anyone who cares enough to look at this list definitely knows the line, but I don't think it would make the list 10 or 20 years from now.

Re: Deathless
Tough, who knows! A great list is one that is well-thought out, spurs conversation, but also is one that is a snapshot of a time. And this time is 2005. So happy Mae West still gets acknowledgement, but a snapshot from 2022 might be quite different.
The list will probably feel incomplete me.

Watched a few months ago, for first time in decades, and really appreciated it a lot more this time. Tough with a film where so many characters are so awful to each other, but this time the humanity in each shone through. Hurt people hurt, the film.
