One of the big underperformers in my 40s and 50s project. It's upbeat, it's good, a mix of rockabilly and Louis Jordan, but obviously was partly huge because it was made by white guys. Lost to "Space Guitar" which is an insane bit of early rock guitar soloing, a good decade ahead of time.

When the AFI compiled this list back on 2004, do you think they patted themselves on the back for having some black representation?

Song of the South race plusses: gave major roles to Black actors, and Baskett in particular is the most positive character in the film.
Negatives: everything else about it.
Overall: boooo, get it outtta here!

Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah race plusses: major song, a silly and happy song, sung by a black Actor/singer with strength, filmed with adoration. Song has nothing to do with the racist film.
Negatives: "zip-a-dee" may have been an ode to similar gobbledygook minstrel songs, which were often lyrically racist or sung in blackface. Oh and it appears in a racist film.
Overall: I think you can separate the song from the film, but it gives me pause. I think you can separate it from minstrel works, but also gives me pause. I think it's acceptable, just barely, but maybe I just want it to be acceptable because I like it.

This looks good and all but my main obsession is the reflection -- or is it a reflection? It doesn't line up, so it's sediment from a delta? Is it some kind of upside down world where there's a layer of snow of Fuji? I debate looking up his intention or the common wisdom, but I kinda like not knowing for sure.

Being written specifically for the movie is a bonus, but it's not as important to me as the song being specifically associated with the movie. Old Time Rock and Roll is forever meshed with Tom Cruise dancing in his underwear. I can't hear Doo Wah Diddy without thinking of Stripes. I can't hear Stuck in the Middle with You without picturing Michael Madsen cutting a cop's ear off. That kind of thing

The list of names needs to be published so that no one ever consults these people for advice on any matter ever again.
