Deathless Thread! (Poison Pill Edition)

Mike. MIKE! I know that! GOD!
No. No. I'm talking about the other way poorpete was being sneaky.

Re: Deathless Thread! (Poison Pill Edition)
I understand that you're frustrated, Kyle, but you're not being very clear about exactly what you think it is that Pete is doing... or maybe what you think he will do?... I don't follow and I don't want to make any assumptions.
Any time the solution is "banjo rifle", I'm in 100%.

Folsom Prison Blues, Everlast
I had no idea til now that this song was from 2008. They've taken the song and laid it over the music from Insane in the Membrane... (Or maybe House of Pain's Jump Around? Which came first?) That's all I need. It's lovely.
Strangely, this year I also found Whole Lotta Folsom by the Surreal McCoys, which puts Folsom over the music from Zeppelin's Whole Lotta Love. I'm amazed that one didn't make the list as well.

Loser, Beck
Perennial favorite. I've had this song in rotation since its release. It is one I don't get tired of. Mellow Gold was my first Beck album and still my favorite.
Back in 1995, when I was a social worker, a group of us were on a long drive to some meeting or conference or something. I asked if I could put on some music and then asked if anyone had preferences for a station... everyone said they didn't care, and Dee made a big production of saying that she likes all sorts of music so put on anything I liked. Well holy shit if I didn't immediately find a station playing Loser. We came right in a the beginning and everything. I was very excited. Literally less than a minute in, she reaches over and turns it off without saying a word and gives me this sour look like I should have known better. I never did like her much.

You'll be Back, Jonathan Groff
Come on.... it's just a fun song. There's no story here except that I think Hamilton is brilliant, and I love this song. And I feel a little self conscious about singling out this particular song ever since Pete pointed out how very white that makes me, but whatever. I yam what I yam.

Couldn't get this song outta my head for so long, because of all the Tik Toks. Absolutely shouldn't be this high on the list, but there it is. Thanks, 2022.

Re: Deathless Thread! (Poison Pill Edition)
I was going to reply here to let you know that I was over exaggerating for effect and then something something about my white guilt and my playlists for the last 45 years, but I can't expound on any of that now, because...
I HAVE REACHED A DECISION!
That IS decidedly sneaky, underhanded, unethical and in violation of the spirit of this thread as intended by its founder. Anyone engaging in such tactics should feel great shame.
Furthermore, such behavior is within the allowed limits of the rules and therefore technically correct--the best kind of correct--so I'll allow it!
Henceforth, use of embedded pictures that are all white, or transparent, or of miniscule size, or possessing other characteristics that make them invisible or unnoticeable to casual observers will be considered a valid and legal interpretation of the rules of this thread as laid out in the original post, and as such will place such posts in the "8 hour" category.

In Your Eyes, Peter Gabriel
Technically on the perennial favorites list and that's what got it so much play, BUT... I actually only put it on that list at the beginning of this year when I rediscovered it and remembered how much I love it. My exact memory of how it came to my attention is fuzzy, but I want to say that somebody brought it up here at nerd pride. Kyle maybe? Pete? I don't remember.

Was it the light? The heat?
Re: Deathless Thread! (Poison Pill Edition)
Not me, though I will say that I wrote down my first parody song, maybe first song I wrote, a parody of this song.
Fluoride,
it whites your teeth,
fluoride,
That's all I remember. Sang it to my dad who said it was mean -- he thought I was saying "four eyes"
Anyways, Kyle urged me to sneak, in a Streisand-effect kind of way, and I regret now that a single transparent pixel means -16 hours. I personally will refrain from such actions moving forward, scouts honor.

Peter Gabriel is one of my top all-time favorite artists. I used to play his Secret World concert on DVD while holding my baby son (who is now 18) and trying to get him to fall asleep.

The Best Ever Death Metal Band in Denton, The Mountain Goats
This song is the one that led me to the other Mountain Goats song on this list, No Children, which I've already named as my favorite of the year. This song is probably my second favorite.
If you search YouTube, there's a bunch of live versions of this song, and it seems that they are all performed differently. Some markedly so. And so far, I like all of them.
We'll hear more about this song later.

Hiphoppopotamus vs. Rhymenoceros, Flight of the Conchords
Here's the hook for me: "I'm the Hiphoppopotamus. My lyrics are bottomless... [17 seconds of awkward silence]." In a two minute song, that's a solid commitment to a bit. I'm entertained every time.

Tom's Diner, Michigan & Smiley
The album shown in the video is Tom's Album and someone who lived in and/or frequented the apartment I shared with Mr. Phoebe (the one owned by Helene, not the one behind the liquor drive in that we shared with Kyle) owned this and it played in that apartment a lot. So this had to be 1991, I think.
In any case, the album contained many versions of Tom's Diner, including the original and a remix by Suzanne Vega. Most of the rest were bad covers or joke songs (the I Dream of Jeannie one was particularly bad), but this reggae version was a hella good song. It stood up on its own, but it also was just a badass adaptation. I forgot about this as my music media slowly shifted over time, but then I heard the crappy cover that appeared lower on this list and realized I hadn't heard Michigan and Smiley in YEARS.
Enjoy. It's a bop.

Re: Deathless Thread! (Poison Pill Edition)
It was me that owned it. I bought it at Tokyo Tower Records. I actually played it at both places.
Re: Deathless Thread! (Poison Pill Edition)
That makes sense. I just remember hearing it at Helene's, but if you bought it in Tokyo, then we didn't listen as a group in that apartment until early 1992. Great song. Thank you for buying it.

Lora Lee, Monocle Band
This song is the whole reason I wanted to do this list again. I've been thinking about how to present this story for weeks, and I still don't know what I'll say for sure. I suppose I just tell the story. Eliahad can correct any errors.
This summer I was fortunate enough to spend several days in Denver and got to be in my friend Dave's wedding. At the reception, live music was provided by Monocle Band. They were stellar. So much fun. Turns out, Dave's lovely bride Emily was once a member of Monocle Band, but the band had to split up due to other life commitments. But they jumped at the chance to reunite for Emily for this event. As the bride, she didn't bring her violin along, but she did get up and sing with the band for a while. Lora Lee was the very best song. I've never seen such pure joy in a performance. It was magic. Even typing this is making me smile like an idiot.
So if you listen to the linked version, that's Emily on the violin, and almost surely on backup vocals as well. So cool.
But I've listened to the song a lot now, and while it seemed like a sweet love song at first, the more I listen the more I'm convinced that she DOESN'T feel the same way as he. He keeps saying "please give me an answer", but I'm pretty sure that he just doesn't like the answer he's getting. That makes it even better.
Great experience, great song, good times.
Any time the solution is "banjo rifle", I'm in 100%.
Re: Deathless Thread! (Poison Pill Edition)
They are so good. I'm still bummed that they had to break up (for awhile?). I know Emily is. They're legit.
