Trees, ranked. 18. Japanese Maple

Love the color, the delicacy yet durability, the lack of disruptive issues in the landscape use, the lovely shapes - everything good here.

Trees, ranked. 17. Banyan

Banyan trees are a type of fig, and they get started by colonizing other trees and then growing all over them. The one below is not very large, but others are so large you can walk up an inner staircase to climb them, and they can take up half a city block with a huge interrelated branching system and canopy. Some end up very round and symmetrical on the outer top and others are going wild all over the place. Initially I thought that this tree, along with other dramatic, impressive favorites like the willow and bald cypress, was going to be in the top 5 or 10, but after a lot of reflecting on trees, this ends up where it is. Great but within a limited range of geography, aesthetic, and purpose.

Trees, ranked. 16. Sequoia

It might be a controversial choice to rank it this low, but they are so rare and specialized and I prefer my top trees to have more versatility. Everyone knows why this tree is such an awe-inspiring queen, of course. I will give you a picture of a younger one so you can see what they look like before they go shooting up towards the heavens. If I had realized the need to include the coast redwood on this list I would put it right before here, but that was part of the learning process.

Trees, ranked. 15. Larch

Sometimes people refer to this as a Tamarack but I think it's correct to say the Tamarack is but one specific kind of Larch among others, so not all Larches should be called Tamaracks. Anyway, the Larch is a tough one to rank because if we were going solely by the incredibly graceful structure of the branches, the refined overlapping lace effect of the needles, and the golden fall color, this tree would surely need to be placed higher. Unfortunately, the needles fall off and the colors are seasonal, so it reaches a limit in that respect and cannot compete as well with the remaining deciduous trees on the list. It's a really close call though. One of the amazing things about this tree is that its golden fall color often stands out among other dark green pinaceae cousins, and you get things like the second picture:

I'm trying to be upbeat about it. But with the shooting in Buffalo, and a 9 yo white kid in Texas going to his black neighbor's porch with whip and demanding that she have her 9 yo daughter come out, and then the white kid's father almost shooting his own daughter when the black parents go to talk to him about his son damaging their car... Well, I'm having a hard time remaining optimistic.

Trees, ranked. 14. Hemlock

This is not the hemlock that killed Socrates; that's a whole different plant. It's this gorgeously draped, brilliantly deep green TSUGA tree, or hemlock, a member of the Fir family. I used to have one of these in the yard and it was essentially its own small ecosystem. The brilliance of the green cannot be overstated.
