Intergalactic, Beastie Boys
Like so many other people, I assumed Beastie Boys were little more than Fight for Your Right when they first hit the scene. Their next radio hit, No Sleep Til Brooklyn, did little to dispel that. But then I saw good reviews of Paul's Boutique, and by the time Sabotage and Intergalactic hit the radio, I realized I really liked them. So I was late to the scene, but I bought their anthology Sounds of Science back in 1999, and I've been a full-on fan ever since.

Joker, Dax
Another very recent addition to my list. This one was on my Tik Tok recommendations and I was immediately obsessed with it. I played this dozens of times over the next couple weeks. And then I made myself sick of it. I still like it, but in moderation.

And to all a good night
Re: Deathless Thread! (Poison Pill Edition)
Sounds of Science a good retrospective though misses Sounds of Science, which is like why??
Maybe because of all the uncredited Beatles samples?

I Hope You're Happy, Games We Play
Song outta nowhere. It's just magically on my list this year. Coulda been from anywhere. Tik Tok? Spotify? YouTube? Some random movie or commercial? There are no breadcrumbs... it just IS. And listen to it. That song was put out this year by some never-heard-of indie band, and it's the quintessential early 2000's post-punk/alt pop sound. It's really glorious, and it speaks specifically to me as a demographic. It's so cool. Listen to these guys.

Just to clarify, embedded images only count in the body of your post, and not when part of the subject line. I went back and forth on this, but I have to draw the line somewhere.

Good morning, and happy 2023
And to the neighbor who insisted on lighting off loud fireworks every 15-30 minutes from midnight until 1:30 AM, may the new year treat you as well as you treat others!

The Moon is Disgusting, That 1 Guy
Many moons ago, in a game of Pathfinder, my kids ran into a goblin circus. As often happens, I allowed the players to name relevant NPCs. And so they attempted to name the master of ceremonies of the goblin circus That One Guy. We felt it didn't quite fit, but after some morphing, he became Datwongey (Duh - TWAHN - Ghee). The circus helped sneak them in and out of the city of Wetfoot, and they became allies. Even considered the offer of joining them, but ultimately declined. Datwongey became a favorite NPC.
So a couple years or so ago when Spotify offered up a song by That 1 Guy "because you like They Might Be Giants", I gave it a shot. It's fun and it has stuck with me, but I wouldn't have even tried if it hadn't been for the name.

Surface Pressure, Jessica Darrow
Without a doubt the best song from Encanto. I love this song. You can try not talking about Bruno all you want, but seriously, this song is it. I think musically, lyrically it is amazing. But more than that, Jessica Darrow's voice is just incredible. I love the way she manages to encapsulate strength plus fragility in this. I'm just in love with it.

Rosana, Wax
Long time favorite. Was probably on last year's list. Still can't convince my wife to karaoke this one with me at the teachers' Christmas party.

99 Problems, Hugo
Another long time favorite, and also another one I probably talked about last year. It's a great cover. Really solid. But my list is starting to be tedious (to me) again. I think the next few are new ones. We'll see shortly.

Walkie Talkie Man, Steriogram
It's a song about the fat security guard who chases you out of the concert. "He's fat and he don't run too fast. But he's faster than me." Great pop-punk energy. I love this song the same way I love some of Smashmouth's stuff. It's high-energy and fun and catchy, and doesn't take anything seriously.
On the other hand, I just found this song in the last couple years, but it wasn't until just now that I learned that the song is almost 20 years old. Hell, it even won a Grammy for best video, which is well deserved, but is not the video I have linked.
