Morning!

That song is so garage, so basic but good, but the drummer is like doing next level shit.

Good time to play Lauryn's version, which comes 70 minutes into "Miseduation", and has been named the greatest hidden track of all time by multiple publications...

At first thought this was a clear imitation of the mood of Sittin on the Dock of the Bay but this predates it... so maybe it's the opposite?

Trying to think what the top 4 will be... I wonder if they will all be duh or there will be a few surprises.

Oh there's three classic hits by three huge bands, wonder if they'll show up...

Hell yeah! Unmistakable and undeniable!

unmistakable, that's the sound of Bobbie Gentry and no one else
undeniable, maybe one of the best story songs, a song about love and culture and a mystery that stays a mystery.

And a triple crossover, hitting both the pop, R&B, and country charts!

Ok realized that the big hits I was thinking of, except one, are from 1966. And based on this list I doubt Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields is #1.

I will now have Penny Lane in my head all day.

No complaints.

Oddly enough, the highest charting Beatles song in '67 was #30 (All You Need is Love); Penny Lane was #55.

I find that unsettling. I've never listened to the lyrics before, and maybe it loses some context after half a century? But I still find it unsettling.

It seems the music of the era was much more varied than most people remember.

Gonna be fascinating to how much if any psychedelia will appear just one year back.

Wikipedia says this is the first number one by a mixed gender group, which ignores four number ones by The Platters as noted on their Wikipedia page.

Dunno if I've heard this song but like the message... surprised it has no wikipedia article as it was popular and there's a lot to analyze

Tiny bit psychedelic, but Donovan's "Sunshine Superman" takes the groovy cake so far
